Stumps India A 167 for 1 and 28 (Murphy 1-1) need 337 runs to beat Australia A at 358 and 173 by December 4 (Sangha 44, Konstas 40) Australia A took control of the second unofficial Test against India A by setting the hosts a target of 365 and then removing Sai Sudarshan minutes before the end of the third day’s play. Strengthened. Ayush Pandey, who was out in the first over of India A’s first innings, however, came out without any loss and ended the day unbeaten. Tushar Deshpande, sent in as a night-watcher, had a few close shaves but also survived the final few minutes.
Earlier in the day, Australia were relentless with the A ball. They attacked the stumps, barely dished out freebies and kept a lid on the run-scoring, using whatever help was on offer. Reverse swing became a factor too once the ball got older and got scuffed up.
Liam Hatcher, probably the quickest of the pacers on show, used that to his advantage, breezing through Shaik Rasheed’s defence courtesy a nip-backer. Corey Rocchioli, who has been impressive throughout the tour, then dismissed Tanush Kotian in similar fashion, the ball pitching outside off and clipping the G between bat and pad. The next player to be bowled by Rocchioli was Anshul Kamboj as he attempted to cross the line.
Jhye Richardson later accounted for Nachiket Bhute and Shams Mulani in the same over, handing Australia a very healthy 191-run first innings lead and allowing them to call the shots for the rest of the day. India A, which had seen Australia re the rewards through their bowling consistency and discipline, was not able to replicate the same. They tried attacking the stumps but erred onto the pads far too often.
India A could not bowl a single maiden over till the 13th over bowled by Mulani, this exposed their problem. They were not helped by the absence of Kamboj, who was called into India’s ODI squad against the West Indies and was later dropped from the game after lunch, as he bowled only a few overs. Australia A also showed a much better performance than in the first unofficial Test.
As an opener, Josh Philippe kept things in check and performed well whenever the India A bowlers went to bowl on his pads. Philippe looked primed for a big score, but an ill-judged single, coupled with Deshpande’s direct hit from mid on, sent the wicket-keeper back to the shed. Sam Konstas did his job at the top of the order too.
He had to live dangerously on a few occasions – including being dropped on 32 by Yash Rathod at leg slip – but he found a way to build a foundation for his side. Konstas eventually perished for 40 after failing to execute a paddle sweep off a very full ball on the stumps. Nathan McSweeney also did well, only swiping the ball from Prafulla Hinge which did not get much bounce and hit the off stump.
Meanwhile, Peter Handscomb did not trouble the scorers and was out for a duck in six balls to Kotian. Jason Sangha, who was batting at number 5, then had to play the role of batting hero. He looked comfortable at the crease and did not let the spinners survive by remaining unbeaten on 44 runs.
He found an able ally in Liam Scott, and their partnership remained unbroken when the visitors declared their innings and set India A a target of 365. The hosts lost Sai Sudharsan a few minutes before stumps on day three, still needing another 337 runs for victory T20 instincts kicked in and Konstas has thrown his wicket away. Not a wicket-taking delivery by any means..
The length was short and it seemed the pitch was holding a bit more than Kontas expected. He goes back to play the pull but gets no timing whatsoever, pulling it straight to Kotian at midwicket. Impact straight away.
Nachiket pitches it full on, Philippe goes to drive sharply but fails to deny the swing. Edges to DDP at second slip. Philippe’s quomdo-conquering innings has come to an end and he looks to play a big innings by coming down the track, makes mistakes and hits it in the air at mid-on, which Rashid takes.
A loud cry and the cordon is confident! It was a good length on off, Handscomb deciding to leave this one late. Kushagra snaffles a low catch and they are up in unison.

The Australian ctain had to go back to a lovely delivery for a duck this time, pitched on a length outside the off stump and spun slightly away to take the outside edge, Sangha on the backfoot was stuck in two minds whether to play or let it go, too late, the ball takes the edge and a good sharp catch by the keeper.

India A are pealing, and they have taken it upstairs! Ultra-edge comes up on the big screen, and yes, there is a spike as the ball passes the bat. The weakest of the edges, and Harper’s brilliant effort was over.
Anshul bags his second. To keep it tight, some reward combos work straight away. A perfect length on middle, nips in enough to beat the bat and to rattle stumps.
Murphy has done his job does him all ends up! Fizzed through on a length just outside off. Richardson moved forward but failed to reach the pitch of the ball.
