Abhishek Sharma with family (Source: abhisheksharma_4/IG) Raj Kumar Sharma, the father and first coach of Abhishek Sharma, gave a media interaction on Saturday, October 3, while wearing a Sunrisers Hyderabad jersey. This pearance immediately grabbed attention as it came at a time when reports were doing the rounds that Abhishek was unhpy with SRH and was considering retiring from the franchise ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL). The timing of Raj Kumar Sharma’s choice of attire raised questions as several media outlets had reported a day earlier that Abhishek Sharma was seeking release from the SRH.
Whether the jersey’s pearance was a conscious show of loyalty to the franchise or simply a coincidence has not been confirmed. Abhishek Sharma has been associated with Sunrisers Hyderabad since 2019 and has established himself as an aggressive opening batsman and an important part of the franchise’s batting line-up. His long association with the team makes the exit speculation particularly notable.
Why would Abhishek Sharma be unhpy with SSR? TOI reports suggest that Abhishek’s dissatisfaction with Sunrisers Hyderabad is due to the franchise’s security plans for IPL 2027. SRH is reportedly considering giving the job to Ishan Kishan while Abhishek Sharma is said to have his own ambitions for the job.
The control situation at SRH is partly due to Pat Cummins being expected to be unavailable for part of the 2027 season due to international commitments, which led the franchise to plan a change at the top of the team. It is important to note that these reports are still pending. SRH CEO K Shanmugam denied the exit reports and called them “fake”.
There is no official confirmation of any formal communication from Abhishek Sharma to the franchise regarding his misfortune. Which franchises have been associated with Abhishek Sharma? According to reports, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings and Delhi Citals are possible destinations for Abhishek if he wants to leave the Hyderabad-based team ahead of the upcoming Indian IPL season.
However, the same reports indicate that only informal discussions have taken place between Abhishek Sharma and several franchises without any significant developments arising from these discussions. The situation therefore remains unclear and unconfirmed at this time. The timeline for SRH’s retention and release decisions before IPL 2027 has also not been officially announced, meaning the full picture of Abhishek’s future within the franchise is not yet clear.
