Michael Bracewell will accept a casual contract for the 2026-27 season to pursue an opportunity in the Big Bash League [BBL], New Zealand Cricket (NZC) recently mentioned on Monday.

Nick Kelly will replace Bracewell on the central contract list, his first national contract 11 years after his first grade debut. Bracewell joined Finn Allen, Mark Chman, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne and Tim Seifert as other players on casual contracts for the 2026-27 season. Bracewell will face India in the five-match home T20I series in Christchurch on October 22.

“The support of New Zealand Cricket means a lot to me to take advantage of this opportunity at this stage of my career,” said 35-year-old Bracewell. “As a player who only plays with white balls, it seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up. I still really like the Blackcs and am looking forward to the upcoming India tour and the future white-ball series.

“I’m also eyeing the opportunity to take part in the inaugural NZ20, which is expected to be launched from next summer.” Nick Kelly reached his second fifty in as many ODI pearances, Bangladesh v New Zealand, 3rd ODI, Chattogram, ril 23, 2026. Kelly, the 33-year-old top batter who made his debut for New Zealand in March 2025, has 15 international CSs, including two as T20I ctain when he replaced the injured Tom Latham in Bangladesh earlier this year. “Nick has been an outstanding player in domestic cricket for several seasons and it is thanks to his hard work that he has secured this first contract at this stage of his career,” said Rob Walter, the New Zealand head coach who coached Kelly for two seasons at Otago. “Introducing players like Nick to international cricket a little later in life certainly has benefits in terms of the player’s knowledge of the game and ability to have the confidence to perform under pressure.” Walter said Kelly, who scored three half-centuries in his last four ODIs, deserved his chance.

“Nick showed his hand with his performances against Bangladesh and West Indies in sometimes difficult conditions,” he said. “He has over 300 professional games under his belt and is one of the best defenders in the country, so he is a great addition to our contracting group.” Michael Bracewell was among the runs, New Zealand v Pakistan, 4th T20I, Mount Maunganui, March 23, 2025
