Australia v New Zealand, 2nd Test, Day 1, at the WACA, Perth, Thursday 20 November 1997 Harry Hoekstra claimed Jake Weatherald for his first wicket Shield, Victoria v South Australia, Day 1, Sheffield Shield, Junction Oval, 7 October 2026 Stumps South Australia 4 for 1 (Hoekstra 1-2) Trail Victoria 244 (Hoekstra 45, Thornton 3-51, Doggett 3-56) with 240 runs Victoria debutant Harry Hoekstra played with the bat and then took an early wicket, despite a number of Test candidates failing to rise to the challenge with the bat on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield season at Junction Oval. Campbell Kellaway, Peter Handscomb and Ollie Peake all missed out as Victoria slumped to 173 for 8 against South Australia after being sent to bat on a surface where there weren’t too many demons despite an even cover of green grass. But Hoekstra rescued them by scoring 45 off 122 deliveries before finally reaching deep point and ending Victoria’s innings on 244.
He then had Jake Weatherald caught with a peachy throw for a duck in his first Shield cricket match, leaving the reigning champions 4 for 1 at stumps. “You would take Jake Weatherald as your first-class first wicketkeeper any day of the week,” Hoekstra said after the game. “The adrenaline was probably still good since I hit.
So I was just lucky enough to make it and throw him a decent ball there to get him out. “South Australian seamers Henry Thornton and Brendan Doggett bagged three wickets each but, with the exceon of Handscomb, most of Victoria’s batters found a way out on a surface that was fairly slow and quiet once the shine of the new ball fell off. But Hoekstra and Doug Warren dug and proved that the surface contained no major trs. The pair survived more than 29 overs to post a 62-run stand that saw Victoria reach the second new ball without further defeat.
There will be some frustration among Victoria’s batters that a 20-year-old debutant is at no. 9 managed to survive for so long against the Shield-winning attack in a row as the South Australian Quicks didn’t bowl very well to take their ten wickets. Doggett’s first wicket came when Kellaway fired a half-volley over leg stump straight to the front pitch.
Marcus Harris crashed hard against Noah McFadyen, earning his first scalp on his Shield debut. McFadyen had a second when Handscomb went heavy on a ball that pinched the seam hard. Handscomb had looked excellent in his 24 off 29 balls and was well out of his territory when he was hit on the pad.
Peake, who entered at No. 4, looked equally at ease as he stroked six boundaries on his 32. He played some sumptuous uphill drives and was hardly worried as the South Australian quicks didn’t get much movement or bounce in the second hour of the first session.
Matt Short also hit several drives downfield while the score was good. Short raced to 31 from 35 balls, including six boundaries, but after a 51-run stand with Peake he inexplicably dragged Thornton straight into the deep throat of the squares. Peake’s brain then went blank just before lunchtime when he peared to have deliberately planned a move out while trying to get to the break, allowing a full, straight throw from Thornton to hit his off-stump flush three-quarters of the way up.
Fergus O’Neill became the fourth Victoria batsman to fall between 24 and 32 when he let a one-length yorker esce Ben Manenti and slip. Wicketkeeper Liam Blackford, who also made his debut after receiving his Victoria C from former Australian and Victoria ctain Aaron Finch, scored well with his 27 before falling victim to excellent fielding from Nathan McAndrew. Blackford hit a forehand right from McAndrew in his follow-up and took two steps forward to run.
McAndrew reached out with his right hand to stop him and make a single move, and he struck before Blackford had time to dive again. South Australia looked set to bowl out Victoria for less than 200 and there was still more than one session left in the day when Thornton scored his third, but the ninth wicket stand was a headache and they looked fairly ineffective towards the end for almost a session, although they missed two chances. Weatherald’s first day in South Australia Shield colors did not end well as he dropped twelve balls in an ugly nine-ball session at the stumps.
Left-hander Hoekstra ducked and sidestepped to scre the left-handed batsman’s outside edge as he continues to try to make up for the technical changes that partly led to his exclusion from the Test squad. SA were almost two runs behind when Henry Hunt attempted a risky single against Peake at this point. Had he hit Mackenzie, Harvey would have been eliminated after abandoning the race halfway through.
