Australia v New Zealand 2nd Test, Day One, at the WACA, Perth, Thursday November 20th 1997 A view of the Allan Border field, Australia A v India A, 1st unofficial Test, Brisbane, 1st day, July 6, 2014 Annabel Sutherland picked up four wickets, Australia vs Bangladesh, 1st Women’s ODI, Brisbane, October 9, 2026 Australia 168 for 3 (Litchfield 77, Habiba 2-36) beat Bangladesh 166 (Moni 45, Sutherland 4-30, Schutt 2-19) by seven wickets Bangladesh ‘s second visit to Australia and their first women’s ODI in the country began on a dispointing note as Australia ran out quick and convincing victors. Annabel Sutherland showed why she is regarded as one of the most versatile fast-bowling allrounders in the world by taking 4 for 30. She kept the batters on their toes by varying the lengths and speeds as Bangladesh were bowled out for 166.

Phoebe Litchfield ‘s swift 77 helped Australia canter home with 24.2 overs and seven wickets to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Bangladesh might have put up an even lower total if not for an intent-filled innings from Ritu Moni . 7, she hit two fours in her first four balls following a phase where Bangladesh scored only 35 in about 15 overs.

Ritu Moni played with a high intent, Australia vs Bangladesh, 1st Women’s ODI, Brisbane, October 9, 2026 When Sutherland’s bouncer cramped Sharmin Akhter for room, leaving her unable to get any control on the pull, Bangladesh were truly under the cosh, having lost three wickets inside the first powerplay. That soon became 48 for 4, which prompted ctain Nigar Sultana, perhs Bangladesh’s best batter, to go into a shell. She hardly looked to score from that point and was hpy to defend and merely prevent further wickets from falling.

The ploy was evident from the fact that Nigar didn’t put Sutherland under pressure when she bowled three successive no-balls in the 12th over. What’s more, unaware of the free hit on offer, she ducked under a short ball as well. Shorna Akter, too, curtailed her aggressive instincts to support her ctain.

Bangladesh crawled at three runs per over through the middle phase before Tahlia McGrath had Nigar caught behind for 29 off 83 balls. Nigar perhs half-referred to her own innings when, after the game, she said that Bangladesh “need to be cautious against the new ball and get the intent right”. As soon as she fell, Moni and Shorna started to put back the pressure on Australia’s spinners.

Moni fetched a couple of sweeps from outside off to hit them through midwicket. Shorna also used her feet more frequently. Phoebe Litchfield attacked in the first powerplay, Australia vs Bangladesh, 1st Women’s ODI, Brisbane, October 9, 2026 Moni looked good to score her second half-century in ODIs but was hampered by cramps.

That hindered her running, and eventually she was run-out for 45 off 63 balls. Sutherland was generous with her use of the back-of-the-hand slower ones from then on to keep the rest of the batters on a leash. Australia were never going to be challenged in a paltry chase of 167, and Georgia Voll and Litchfield hit five fours in the first five overs of the chase to get them going.

That is when Bangladesh found another performer of note. Seventeen-year-old Habiba Islam , on ODI debut, bowled a sharp bouncer which got rid of Voll. Habiba, who made her T20I debut against India in 2024 as a 15-year-old, got the ball to nibble around at high pace.

While her first spell was expensive, she returned in the middle overs to get Beth Mooney caught brilliantly at midwicket. She bowled the length ball outside leg and got it to move in late, and Mooney could only spoon it to Fargana, who ran in from the circle and completed a diving catch. But between these two bits of celebration for Habiba and Bangladesh, Litchfield had almost killed the chase.

She moved around the crease to hit Marufa Aklter for three successive fours in the seventh over of the chase, and then muscled Habiba over mid-on for the only six in the match. She played her trademark reverse sweep off Nahida Akter and soon got to fifty off just 35 balls. Her second-wicket stand with Ellyse Perry was worth 89 off 67 balls with Perry contributing only 15 off 23.

Until the time Litchfield stepped out and drove Rabeya Khan straight to cover, it looked as if she would complete a century even with so few runs to get. Bangladesh were bowled out for 166 with only Ritu Moni showing any intent with the bat, and it took Australia just 25.4 overs to finish off the chase Annabel Sutherland picked up four wickets, Australia vs Bangladesh, 1st Women’s ODI, Brisbane, October 9, 2026 Schutt strikes with her first ball! And Bangladesh lose a wicket on the first ball of their ODI debut in Australia.

Curves in nicely from a length outside off. Fargana doesn’t judge how much it swings in. Hangs her bat out to defend but gets a thick edge – almost from near the handle – and lobs to Litchfield at lone slip Huge should for lbw, Schutt gets it in her favour.

But Sarmin opts for the review. Some issue with Hawk-Eye and DRS and so, Sarmin will have to walk back. Schutt bowls it full and gets it to swing in again.

Is the impact just outside off? We will never know because Hawk-Eye is down. Sarman ends up playing inside the line and is hit on the pad.

Sutherland plugs away just around that off-stump this time, gets this to hold its line. Zero footwork by Shobhana who wafts at the delivery to get a thick edge through to Mooney. She looked out of depth for the time she was in the middle today.

that is a cracking delivery, the kind of delivery you wanna bowl all day. And one that stays in your head, rent free. Tossed up, gently drifting into middle stump and then hits the surface and turns enough to go right through the batter as she plays all around it to strike the front pad.

Massive peal for lbw but wasn’t given. can’t be denied through the DRS. That’s as plumb as they come.

The only reason why the umpire may have not given it out is because she thought there may have been some bat. Replays confirm there was absolutely none. End of a laboured innings from Shorna.

Short and outside off, gets a top edge on the pull. Lands away from mid-on running back to her left. Fires a flat, sharp throw to Sutherland, who disturbs the stumps in a flash.

A cramping Moni is just short of the crease and her fighting innings comes to an end uppish and caught at gully! The bat face turned in her hand as she went fo an expansive drive, no control of the stroke and ended up scooping it to Gardner. A simpler catch for Perry and she makes amends!

End of the partnership on 87 balls, which is a brilliant delivery, the kind of delivery you want to bowl all day. And what will stay in your memory: rent-free. Thrown upwards, it drifts gently towards the middle stump, then hits the surface and rotates enough to pass through the batter as it plays around to hit the front pad.

Solid, robust bell, but was not given as a gift. cannot be rejected via DRS. That’s as plumb as they come.

The only reason the referee may not have given it is because she thought it might have been a bat. Repetitions confirm that there were absolutely none. End of a tedious round from Shorna.

Some problems with Hawk-Eye and DRS and Sarmin therefore need to be reversed. Debris fills it and brings it back. Is the impact just outside?
