Tasmania handed NSW its first defeat of the domestic limited-overs competition season and triumphed by 57 runs under DLS at Cricket Central in Sydney on Tuesday. Prestwidge – not known for his exploits with the bat – was catulted to the top of the order, scoring 71 off 56 balls with six fours and five sixes, either side of two rain delays that lasted almost three hours.

“I don’t know if it suits me,” laughed the 24-year-old when asked about his unusual role as flyhalf. “It was great to take the opportunity to give the team a really good start. It would have been nice to move on, but that doesn’t matter…

It was great fun.” When Tasmania returned to the field unbeaten on 53, he swung free with 21 overs to go and finished the game on 203. NSW never seemed able to overtake Tasmania’s revised total of 216, winning 30 overs, and were eventually dismissed for 158 off 26. Ollie Davies, fresh from his double century in New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield tie against the Tigers, lost his wicket for 13 late in the second over and his compatriot Kurtis Patterson fell two balls later.

The number of wickets steadily declined during NSW’s chase as the middle order of Riley Kingsell, Ryan Hicks and Will Salzmann failed to convert their starts. Tasmania’s Caleb Jewell removed Liam Hatcher to end the game after the bottom man challenged NSW’s top scorer Jake Scott for a careless single. Highly rated player Raf MacMillan was the Tasmanian bowlers’ choice.

Prestwidge, who took 1-18 in three overs, said rain delays made the game “difficult”. “It’s huge for us to have two [wins] from three [games],” he added.
