The update, reported on September 14, comes on the heels of the pointment of Sourav Ganguly as head coach and Yuvraj Singh as assistant sharpshooter and batting coach. “I give the bowlers a lot of freedom,” Vaas said in a video released by DC on Saturday. “As a fast bowler – I have played for so many years – I always believe that bowlers should execute their plans.
If they don’t know, I’m there to help them and give them my experience, no matter the field conditions. “But I still believe bowlers should know their strength; bowlers should know their pitch parameters. If they know all about [these things], we as coaches have to guide them to reach the next level. » This is Vaas’ debut as an IPL coach, although he has plenty of experience as a coach in international cricket.
He had several stints with the Sri Lanka men’s team, in 2012–15, 2016–17 and briefly in 2021 – he resigned two days into his term due to a salary dispute – and in 2022. He had started his coaching career as an advisor to the New Zealand men’s team and worked for Ireland in the 2016 World T20. Vaas, who played for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers in the first three seasons of the IPL, worked for years with Sri Lanka Cricket as a fast bowling consultant and academy mentor, and also coached NYS Lagos in the 2024 Zim Afro T10 League and was head coach of the Kandy Royals in the 2026 LPL.
Vaas, along with Amit Mishra, who is expected to join DC as spin bowling coach, is said to have already spent some time in Delhi to work with the franchise’s academy players. Recently, DC traded left-arm quicker T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and brought in leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari. They had earlier traded Kuldeep Yadav to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in exchange for Rishabh Pant.
As reported in June, DC, which has never won the IPL title and finished sixth in 2026, was expected to change the coaching staff of the last two seasons: Venugopal Rao (team manager), Hemang Badani (head coach), Munaf Patel (bowling coach) and Ian Bell (assistant coach). The move is in line with the agreement reached between DC’s co-owners – GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and Jindal South West (JSW) Sports – post-IPL 2024, under which each owner will control franchise operations in alternating two-year cycles.
