New Zealand has prepared detailed plans to counter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ahead of the five-match T20 series that begins at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday. The 15-year-old Indian opener has made a significant impact on international cricket since making his debut in July, establishing himself as one of the most aggressive young batsmen in the game. Sooryavanshi made his T20 international debut on 4 July against England and became the youngest Indian men’s international.
The New Zealand bowling department examined Sooryavanshi’s proach and tactical weaknesses ahead of the series. New Zealand coach Jacob Duffy confirmed on Tuesday that his team had carried out a thorough analysis of the teenage sensation. Duffy told reporters that the preparation goes beyond just video review and that the team is developing specific strategies to challenge Sooryavanshi in the upcoming matches.
The New Zealand bowler spoke to the media ahead of the opening match at Hagley Oval on October 20, 2026. “Firstly, he is an incredible talent. Obviously he has taken the IPL by storm and the amazing thing is that he does it so hard but does it so consistently.
He achieves a 250 hit rate in every game and rarely misses his target. That in itself is amazing. I think he played in England so the conditions will be a little different for him, so that’s obviously something he’ll have to deal with.
We definitely had a good exploratory visit to him and laid out our plans of what we wanted to do with him,” Duffy was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. Sooryavanshi’s international T20 record is 246 runs from 8 matches at an average of 30.75 and a strike rate of 186.36. The left-handed opener reached a milestone in July when he became the youngest player to hit a half-century in men’s international cricket, scoring 50 runs in just 18 balls against Zimbabwe.
His aggressive hitting proach caught the attention of opposing teams preparing for the series. Duffy explained New Zealand’s intelligence efforts and the unique challenges Sooryavanshi poses for the bowling attack. The leader emphasized the teenager’s resilience and the need to adt to different conditions.
“He’s from Invercargill so he promised me a bit of a boost. As long as it’s not Hyderabad, I’m hpy,” said Duffy.
