England’s experienced players, including Nat Sciver-Brunt, will be allowed to miss a three-match T20I series in Sri Lanka if their franchises qualify for the 2027 WPL final in India.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced the dates for the England tour on Wednesday. The three T20Is in Pallekele are scheduled from February 1 to 5 in preparation for the inaugural Women’s T20 Champions Trophy to be played in India from February 14 to 28. England will then return to Sri Lanka for three ODIs in Dambulla from March 4-8. The WPL runs from January 14 to February 7 and has learned that the ECB will allow English players to fulfill their franchise obligations even if it means missing Sri Lanka’s T20Is.

The proach is to recognize that the WPL playoffs provide players with good preparation for the Champions Trophy through high-stakes matches in suitable conditions. Sciver-Brunt (Mumbai Indians), Lauren Bell (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) and Sophie Ecclestone (UP Warriorz) have all been snped up by their franchises for 2027. Only two England players – Sophia Dunkley and Kira Chathli – took part in next week’s auction, with the majority wanting to give priority to the Sri Lanka series.

Currently, no Sri Lankan players are affected by the scheduling conflict, although Chamari Athaththu and Mithali Ayodhya both took part in the auction scheduled for October 28. The ECB has already allowed players to miss bilateral T20Is to play in the WPL, with four players – Ecclestone, Sciver-Brunt, Alice Csey and Danni Wyatt-Hodge – arriving late for a series in New Zealand due to their participation in the 2024 edition. The inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy was originally scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka in June and July 2027.

The dates were brought forward earlier this year by the International Criminal Court, which then stripped Sri Lanka of its hosting rights and moved the tournament to India due to government interference in cricket administration. England will also hold a red-ball training camp in India in January, with selection taking place in the coming weeks. The move follows head coach Charlotte Edwards’ praise at the end of the home summer, saying her side should focus more on Test cricket after India beat them by 270 runs at Lord’s in July and have an Ashes series looming in the middle of next year.

“In December, January, February and before our summer in England our red-ball cricket will be the focus,” Edwards said at the time. “It is expected that some players will retire from county cricket. I’m going to release it now because we have some best vs. best [planned]. » T20I series: February 1, 3 and 5 (all in Pallekele) ODI series: March 4, 6 and 8 (all in Dambulla) Additional reports: Valkerie Baynes and Andrew Fidel Fernando England will also play three ODIs in Sri Lanka in March after India’s first Champions Trophy.
