Ashraful was pointed as Bangladesh’s batting coach in November 2025. The BCB said in a press release that he would be taking on a new role on the board and that Salahuddin would continue in the role until a permanent replacement was offered. Incidentally, it was Salahuddin, who had previously served as an assistant coach, who headed the batting unit before Ashraful replaced him.

The board did not provide any further details about Ashraful’s new role. Ashraful was part of one of the greatest moments in Bangladesh’s history. He was just 20 years old when he led the team to a stunning victory over Australia in 2005.

This century was part of a career that spanned 177 ODIs and 3468 runs, his country’s fifth highest run. Ashraful also played 61 Tests – becoming the youngest player to score 100 – and 23 T20Is, and was active in domestic cricket just two years ago. But his own career was not without ups and downs.

In 2013, he received a lengthy ban from all BCB-related cricket activities due to match-fixing in the Bangladesh Premier League. Three years later he was finally accepted back into the club and took over as coach. Mohammad Salahuddin is expected to take over the role on an interim basis while Ashraful will take on a new role within the BCB.
