Cheteshwar Pujara. (SOurce:X/twitter) Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara named his current ODI World XI, drawing immediate attention for the prominent names he chose to leave out. Indian T20I ctain Shreyas Iyer, a middle-order regular for India in ODIs, and England white-ball ctain Harry Brook were the notable omissions.
Brook’s omission is particularly notable. The England white-ball ctain had recently recorded the fastest double century in ODI history, yet Pujara did not find a place for him in his side. Shreyas Iyer, who currently leads India in T20 Internationals, was also overlooked.
Iyer, a consistent member of India’s ODI middle order, was a significant absentee and his exclusion is notable given the role he played in the Indian batting line-up. Pujara’s selection attracts players from five nations: India, England, South Africa, New Zealand and West Indies. Rohit Sharma was pointed as the ctain of the team.
Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was omitted and no Pakistani cricketer was included in the starting XI. Who did Pujara pick in his ODI World XI? In a video for The World, Pujara chose Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma as the opening pair, with Virat Kohli coming in at number one.
3 and the Englishman Joe Root in 1st place. Wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul was placed at number 1. 5 while West Indian batsman Shai Hope took 1st place.
South African all-rounder Marco Jansen complemented the batting line-up and provided overall depth in the lower league. For the bowling attack, Pujara turned to Indian left-wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav alongside pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. New Zealand seamer Matt Henry and West Indian fast bowler Jayden Seales were the other two bowlers named who brought international prominence to the attack in four countries.
Pujara’s full current ODI World XI selection comes ahead of the India-New Zealand ODI series in which the two teams are expected to face each other in five matches. The timing lends additional relevance to the selection, as discussions about the composition of India’s middle class and Iyer’s continued absence from those considerations are likely to lead to debate as the series proaches. The eleven does not contain any specialist finishers under No.
6, with Jansen the main lower-order contributor with bat and ball. The selection reflects Pujara’s preference for proven quality across formats rather than specific profiles, with the timing of the announcement becoming more relevant as the India-New Zealand series proaches. Cheteshwar Pujara’s current ODI World XI: Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma (wicketkeeper), Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Shai Hope, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Marco Jansen, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Matt Henry, Jayden Seales.
