Matthew Breetzke (Source: Fancode) South African batsman Matthew Breetzke created one of the most eye-catching moments of the ongoing Test series against Australia when he performed a series of exaggerated kangaroo les across the pitch following the dismissal of Marnus Labuschagne during the 3rd Test at Newlands, Ce Town. The celebration immediately garnered a lot of attention on social media, with the clip circulating ridiculously across all platforms. The dismissal came during player Simon Harmer’s bowling towards the end of the first session of the second day’s play.
Labuschagne only had five throws to deal with before he beat Aiden Markram to esce the last ball of Australia’s 18th over and score a five-ball duck. Breetzke responded by leing energetically across the pitch toward the outgoing batter, careful not to step on the bowling ring during his spirited display. The moment came during an important series return for Breetzke. The Port Elizabeth right-handed batsman has been included in the Proteas Test squad for this three-match series against Australia in place of Tristan Stubbs, a selection that follows a productive run in limited-overs cricket. Breetzke made his Test debut in October 2024 against Bangladesh and, prior to this recall, had last peared in a Test as recently as June 2025 against Zimbabwe.
Breetzke’s recent form and his comeback in the test team. Breetzke’s ODI numbers before this series have underlined why the selectors turned to him. In 17 ODI pearances, Breetzke had amassed 881 runs at an average of 58.73, including two centuries and six fifties, with a top score of 150. His last ODI was against Australia on September 30, 2026, so the move to the Test team was a natural extension of his involvement with the same opposition.
His limited contributions against Australia have been notable in recent months. During the three-match ODI series in Australia in August 2025, he became South Africa’s top scorer with 145 runs in the series, including an 88 in the 2nd ODI in Mackay, which helped the Proteas win that match by 84 runs and win the series 2-1. He also scored 85 in the 2nd ODI against England at Lord’s in early 2025, a knock that helped South Africa win by five runs and secure a bilateral ODI series in England for the first time since 1998.
