Heading into the final ten overs of the farewell game in Lahore, England were in danger of a fourth defeat in a row and their third in a row from a seemingly impregnable position. Although Ben Duckett’s 167 gave him an impressive 387 margin of victory, Pavan Rathnayake – the hero of Sri Lanka’s 430-run chase in Rawalpindi last week – had his team back on track at 300 for 5 after 40 overs. This time, however, England achieved the crucial breakthrough that had eluded them in recent painful defeats, notably through Liam Dawson, who finished with 4 for 49 in ten overs, and McCullum was subsequently pleased with the character his team had shown after such a series of setbacks.

“It was a very satisfactory performance today,” McCullum told Sky Sports. “We were put under pressure again. We talked at length before this tri-series about wanting to get some experience with some of our guys because although we have talent, we don’t have a particularly experienced one-day team.

“To be honest we were probably late in the game when they were down five points but Brooky was able to slow it down, make a few plays and obviously we were able to get the wickets we needed.” But he would have grown enormously. I can’t praise his talent enough, not just his tactics but also his leadership.

“I think he is one of the best tactical players I have ever met,” McCullum added. “He has such a smart brain. He hardly shows his intelligence, but he is a very, very active man and a very active cricketer.

And he has the respect of the entire locker room. They follow him. He is interactive with his leadership.

It’s not just him alone. He also speaks to many other people. He will have learned a lot by being put in a situation like this, where the game moves at lightning speed and you have to make decisions that can win or lose a game.

“So we were put in situations where we were exposed at times but also successful at times, and we saw a lot of different people step up and perform and some others who learned some great lessons from that journey.” I think this will be very useful for us in the future. McCullum admitted England were “dispointed” at having no chance of reaching the final of the three series as Sri Lanka’s win against Pakistan on Monday ended any mathematical chance. However, with the team set to travel to Australia later this week for a warm-up game against Western Australia and then three more ODIs, he is confident they remain on track for the 50-over World Cup in South Africa, which begins this time next year.

“We will sit down and evaluate what we did well, what we didn’t do well and how we can continue to improve,” McCullum said. “We want to be a team that can seriously challenge for the World Cup in 12 months and we know we have to improve, but we will and I am sure we will learn from these lessons.” This experience was very good for us, even if it was dispointing that we didn’t make it to the final. » Despite their overall deficiencies, England enjoyed several individual performances, including Brooks’s career-best score (202) against Sri Lanka, Duckett’s consecutive hundreds in the last two games and Tom Banton’s trio of fifties at the top of the order.

Dawson’s seven wickets at 21.42 were also notable, not least because he was selected ahead of experienced England spinner Adil Rashid, who has not featured in the last three games. “Liam Dawson has done a really good job for us here,” McCullum said, adding that left-arm spin was a constant threat throughout the tournament, particularly from Pakistan’s Arafat Minhas, who leads the average with nine wickets at 16.11. “If you look at all three teams, footwork hasn’t played a big role and we want to be a team that can adt to different conditions and be quite flexible with our selections,” McCullum said.

“Dawson is an experienced and very competitive player who has come into his own here and unfortunately for Rash the conditions were probably against him on this occasion.” Harry Brook lands on the ground, England vs Sri Lanka, Pakistan ODI Tri-Series, October 29, 2026
