After scores of 1 and 2 in the first unofficial Test last week, Dhruv Jurel marked his return to the scoring chase with a combative, unbeaten 99 that helped prevent Indian A from clashing with New Zealand A on the opening day in Christchurch.
Jurel faced a crisis when India A lost 3 for 6 within six deliveries in the afternoon session but put up a 62-run stand with Manav Suthar for the seventh wicket. He continued his good batting work in the lower order with an unbeaten 69-run partnership with Akash Deep. Jurel reached 90 in the 79th over but was content to bowl the remaining nine overs at stumps.
The surface wasn’t as green as Lincoln’s, but there was still plenty of lateral movement available to the fast bowlers. Fraser Sheat constantly threatened both edges with his late swing for most of the day – evidenced by the fact that all four wickets were either in the weight or bowled. After Yashasvi Jaiswal missed a four-ball duck that day – lbw to an inswinger from Sheat – B Sai Sudharsan, promoted to opener in the absence of KL Rahul, and Devdutt Padikkal, fresh from 199 in the first game, set about rebuilding the innings.
The couple held their own for the rest of the first session. The blow was not easy and both men were eager to make the difficult first attack. Sai Sudharsan was particularly lucky when he survived a thick inside edge in the fifth over that almost destroyed his leg stump.
In the seventh game, also against Sheat, he peared to have been caught playing around the front court, only for the umpire to inexplicably give him the benefit of the doubt. After overcoming these initial problems, Sai Sudharsan started playing smooth drives. Padikkal, who was 5 for 40 at one point, quickly caught up with his partner by playing a series of excellent drives, almost as if he was simply continuing the previous game.
Padikkal tried to counter the late move at Hagley Oval by striking well outside the crease and taking a long forward step to take the weight off the board. And when the bowlers made a mistake by bowling too short, he quickly pounced, a late point that brought his half-century in the second session. Sai Sudharsan also looked set for the long haul but was knocked out of the game immediately after lunch by an outside off deal against big seamer Jarrod McKay.
This triggered the start of a meltdown as Sheat went on a rampage. Padikkal cut, R. Smaran, playing his first game on the tour, left a throw that didn’t mean as much as it was to get the first ball in weight, and Washington Sundar played and missed a full toss that only went one way. At 160 for 6 with more than half a day’s play to go, Jurel set about rebuilding the innings.
At first he struggled to cope with the late movement and impact, but as the New Zealand A sailors grew more tired, they strayed further into the pads and Jurel removed them. After waiting all afternoon, New Zealand A called on left-hander Jayden Lennox to try and outsmart a right-hander (Jurel) in a lineup with strong lefties. Jurel swept well and used the crease well to cut or dab when he made a mistake to keep the scoreboard ticking for his half-century.
Suthar also held his own and showed the team management what he can offer with the bat in addition to his spin with his left arm. He managed 22nd place until a loose ride against Lennox caused him to drop back. Jurel then took control of the innings and organized the lower order, adding 69 runs with Akash deep to give India A some semblance of control towards the end of the day. Things could have been a lot worse for them, as they had been in the first innings at Lincoln, but Jurel’s fighting stroke gave the bowlers more of a cushion to work with when play resumed.
NZ A vs Ind A – Unbeaten Dhruv Jurel 99 and Devdutt Padikkal 80 carry India A vs New Zealand A. Fraser Sheat led the attack for New Zealand A with four wickets on the opening day in Christchurch. Dhruv Jurel threw the ball, Sri Lanka A vs India A, 1st Unofficial Test, Galle, 1st Day, June 25, 2026, given this time! Once again, it is this great wavering that causes Jaiswal’s downfall. Later in the shot as he proaches.
He’s a dead duck. “Jaiswal’s third consecutive low score on tour”. Sheat starts the banana swing, starts from the outside and comes way back.
Jaiswal had no answers. McKay hits the first ball after lunch as Sudharsan walks away. He comes through the wicket, the angle takes the ball away from him as he stands up, Sudharsan gives a push and doesn’t even wait for the keeper to complete the catch.
He was immediately on his bike. Bad move after all that hard work. Padikkal pays the price for excessive aggression.
It was very short, but certainly not wide enough to cover the point behind it. Padikkal is bitterly dispointed with the shooting. New Zealand are fighting back.
nibbles a full delivery and leaves. Rathod looked so good, but a split second of indecision cost him dearly. A very hesitant move to a delivery that skewed and straightened the seam.
By then Rathod had progressed. A wicket well-deserved. given out first ball!
Score a hat-trick and Smaran returns with just one goal. This one came back from distance around the stumps, Smaran offering no shots as he feared it might rebound. But he was back in territory and the ball didn’t have far to go.
The afternoon continues to improve for Sheat. Dream start to the last session as Washington’s distrust is over. Tail full, straight, late and straight in front as it lacks it.
Double-Nelson has struck. The bait is taken. Lennoxx delivers a nice, wide throw and turns the batter into a booming drive.
Suthar obeys, hits an outside edge and Mitch Hay makes no mistake behind the sticks. This time with classic bowling intelligence! Once again, it is this great wavering that causes Jaiswal’s downfall.
