Prithvi Shaw (Source: delhicitals on IG) Former India batsman Prithvi Shaw made an emotional return to Delhi Citals ahead of the 2026 IPL season after the franchise released him ahead of the 2025 IPL auction. Shaw was part of the Delhi franchise from 2018 to 2024 and was acquired for ₹7.5 crore ahead of the IPL 2024 before his departure. When the franchise bought him back for ₹75 lakh in the IPL 2026 auction, it marked a homecoming for the opening batsman.
However, Shaw failed to reach a match throughout the 2026 IPL season, promng cricket analyst Aakash Chopra to comment on the situation. The retention deadline for IPL 2027 is set for November 17 as the BCCI postponed the original deadline due to a collision with the fifth ODI between India and New Zealand at the Bay Oval from November 15. The IPL 2027 mini-auction will take place on December 16 at the ITC Grand Goa, marking the first auction on Indian soil since 2022.
Chopra made her position clear whether the Delhi Citals should retain Shaw or let him go. “If you want to play Prithvi Shaw, keep him. Otherwise, let that guy go.
This is a serious one. By keeping him for ₹75 lakh, you are wasting his time. So I would say release him,” Chopra said on her YouTube channel.
What should Delhi Citals do about their fast bowling? Chopra’s recommendation reflects a broader concern about how franchises manage their team resources. Shaw’s inability to take part in a game during IPL 2026 despite being bought at auction has raised questions about his future with the franchise.
Instead of retaining a player without using his services, Chopra feels that the Delhi Citals should take a crucial decision on Shaw’s future and either commit to playing him or release him so that he can pursue opportunities elsewhere. Beyond Shaw, Chopra also addressed other concerns of the Delhi Citals team, particularly the fast bowling department. He identified the rid attack as a visible weakness that requires immediate attention.
“Aaqib Nabi is ₹8.40 crore. That’s why I’m going to release him first, because his release will also free up a lot of money. You need this money to buy players or you trade it with someone.
You have a problem that you need to solve,” Chopra said. “You need more fast bowlers. Indian fast bowlers include Mukesh Kumar, Aaqib Nabi and Madhav Tiwari.
“Their weaknesses are visible in fast bowling,” he added. Chopra suggested that Delhi Cital should explore trade deals with Gujarat Titans or Lucknow Super Giants to acquire additional fast bowlers in exchange for a middle-order batsman so that the franchise can address its bowling deficiency. “Talk to Gujarat.
They have a lot of fast bowlers or Lucknow. They have a lot of fast bowlers. “Both need middle-order batsmen to give in exchange for fast bowlers,” he added.
