(Source – BCCI) Ravichandran Ashwin has hinted that India could make changes to their playing XI for the fourth T20I against New Zealand on Friday, October 30, at Eden Park, Auckland. India have already won the five-match T20I series with comprehensive wins in the first three matches, giving the Gautam Gambhir-led team management an opportunity to test the fringe players in the remaining matches. While Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav have not featured in any game on the tour so far, Ashwin has warned the Indian team against sending the spinners straight to New Zealand’s smaller pitches.
The former India spinner felt that one of the two spinners or even Mayank Yadav could replace Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who did not have an ideal return to international cricket after almost four years away from the team. “We can also rotate like New Zealand does. But before we think about that, we must remember that the first two matches were played on a large pitch where spinners could have been used.
In the third T20I, even New Zealand spinners were of no help,” Ashwin said in Ash ki Baat. “In the next two games the fields will be even smaller. So I don’t know if weirdos can play it.
But the way Bhuvi has played, a spinner or a Mayank could take his place and that wouldn’t surprise me,” he added. Why might India rotate their playing eleven? Ashwin’s assessment of the ground conditions and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s recent performances formed the basis of his spin suggestion.
The smaller venues for the remaining games present a different challenge compared to previous phases of the series. Ashwin’s caution in using spinners reflects the practical reality of playing on New Zealand’s compact pitches, where pace and bounce often dominate the spin-friendly conditions. Mayank Yadav, the right-arm fast bowler, made his T20I debut on October 6, 2024 against Bangladesh.
The 24-year-old has featured in six T20I matches so far, picking up nine wickets. His last T20I pearance came in the first match against New Zealand. However, he was replaced by Prince Yadav from the second T20I.
