Duckett offered the only significant resistance of the entire innings with his seventh ODI hundred, a masterfully composed strike made all the more impressive by the stark contrast to what his teammates could manage. It was a lonely hand, however, and when a 92-run partnership was broken over the fifth wicket, England collsed again. Pakistan, dressed in bright pink to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Day, beat green by winning their first toss of the series and landing in England.
Suddenly it was like old times when Afridi struck in the first over, promng the in-form Tom Banton into a tame short-cover scoop that took 150 ODI wickets. In the next over, Joe Root fell in an unusually gentle manner, hitting Afridi at backward point while Saim Ayub took a low, crisp catch. But the crisis horn sounded with the clumsy exit of Harry Book as he flew out for a risky second, betting against Razaullah’s rocket arm.
A small slip on the fresh turf didn’t help him, and an excellent throw caught him well in front of his goal crease. When Jordan Cox urged Afridi to slip first after a short, choppy innings, England were four down at 53 with a lot of rebuilding work still to be done. Ben Duckett’s century was the highlight of England’s innings, Pakistan v England, Tri-Series, Lahore, October 25, 2026. It was a task that Curran and Duckett took on with steely determination.
Duckett, who had witnessed the carnage on the other side, was far from stuck. He took on Razaullah, weathered the Afridi storm and hit better than a ball, single-handedly keeping England’s run rate competitive. The pair quickly dropped Ayub from the attack and moved into the middle while Salman Agha and Shadab Khan investigated.
They took England past three figures and put the 50-point partnership into play, and as the score neared the 100 mark they set themselves up for a big target. It took the reintroduction of Afridi to finally break the bar. Afridi was perhs guilty of turning too early and when he peppered Curran with the short ball that became even more evident.
Curran’s discomfort with this length led to him being run out and Pakistan having a chance. Still keeping Pakistan at bay, Duckett pushed a hundred towards Arafat Minhas, who had strangely been held back until the 29th. Minhas has a much better bowling record than the left-handers and would account for Duckett in the follow-up with a loop from the top edge to Salman behind square.
He made short work of Jamie Overtion while Razaullah removed Liam Dawson with a superb catch off his own bowling. With England just over 200 and a wicket away, Gus Atkinson ensured they came back with some semblance of momentum, hitting a few powerful shots to cobble together 40 for the 10th wicket. It was the second highest partnership of the innings and perhs told its own story on an afternoon where the hosts ran rampant.
