The visitors were 98 for 5 at stumps at Bellerive Oval on Wednesday and needed a further 173 runs to win after Matt Short and nightwatchman Todd Murphy were dismissed in the final three overs of the day. Victoria needed Short and opener Marcus Harris to hit the stumps, but Short chased Bell’s delivery outside off stump and did not move his front foot towards drive. He was dirty with himself after wicketkeeper Jake Doran took advantage of the easy catch to remove him for 17.
Murphy didn’t survive at stumps and beat a ball from Riley Meredith to catch Jordan Silk at first slip for a duck. Harris was on 39 and Liam Blackford had yet to score – narrowly surviving a couple of excellent throws from Meredith in the last over of the day – while Bell took 3 for 22. Bell had a great day – contributing 35 undefeated times at No. 1.
10, his highest score in first grade. Victoria pacer Harry Hoekstra also continued his fine debut Shield season as Tasmania were dismissed for 236 in the second innings. 7 Nikhil Chaudhary is the top scorer with 81.
The opening left-arm bowler took 4 for 52 to return to his five-wicket haul in the first innings. Hoekstra made his Shield debut last week, top-scoring with 45 in Victoria’s opening game and then taking 6 for 103 as South Australia won by an innings. Tasmania got back into the game at 39 to 4 and Hoekstra made the first breakthrough.
Ben McDermott went for a direct hit but Short took an excellent catch at cover and pushed it out for 33. That left the home side at 75 for 5, and it was a big wicket considering how much McDermott had in the first innings. McDermott and Doran were the only Tasmanians to reach double figures at this point in the game.
When Murphy bowled Doran lbw for 47, Tasmania were 125 for 5. But Chaudhary ensured they set the Vics a target of 270 – the highest innings total of the game – by hitting six fours during his 123-ball knock as Bell continued to wag his tail. Bell then shone with the ball, dismissing Campbell Kellaway for a duck.
When he also caught young Victorian star Ollie Peake in a six-ball duel, the visitors found themselves in all sorts of conflict at 6-a-side. Test veterans Harris and Peter Handscomb got out and put on 66 for the second wicket. Just as they looked well placed, Handscomb fired a shot from Meredith down the throat of Chaudhary with a deep square leg.
While his 39 off 59 balls was valuable, Handscomb missed his chance to score big. Victoria were 98 for 5 in the chase of 271 after Chaudhary scored 81 for Tasmania while Bell contributed 35.
