‘If that ship was ever in the harbour, it’s definitely sailed now’ – Ethan Bamber on England hopes
Cricknation Update: ‘If that ship was ever in the harbour, it’s definitely sailed now’ – Ethan Bamber on England hopes (Photo by Gareth Copley/) Ethan Bamber has dismissed the prospect of an England Lions call-up despite an outstanding 2026 County Championship season with Warwickshire .
The 27-year-old took 69 wickets across 14 games, the most by any bowler in the competition, as Warwickshire claimed their ninth Championship title. His standout performance came in the title-clinching match against Leicestershire, where he claimed match figures of 9 for 94 to finish the season with 69 wickets at an average of 19.39. Speaking at the PCA Awards, Bamber reflected on his international prospects with characteristic candour.
He acknowledged that any realistic window for England Lions selection had closed, with his excellent domestic form and performances since Warwickshire winning the trophy having attracted attention. “If that ship was ever in port, it has certainly sailed now. What I’m thinking of is how I can contribute next year for Warwickshire, and try to help us continue to be successful moving forward.
That’s really what makes me a bit nervous and excited,” said Bamber as quoted by . Bamber joined Warwickshire from Middlesex and sent down 445.3 overs across all 14 games during the campaign. His workload and consistency throughout the season underlined his importance in the county’s title winning effort.
Despite individual accolades, Bamber has remained steadfast about his achievements and role within the team structure. Warwickshire ctain Ed Barnard expressed strong backing for Bamber’s potential and compared his proach to that of England Test bowler Ollie Robinson . Barnard acknowledged Bamber’s reluctance to accept praise but highlighted the quality of his bowling throughout the season.
“I think the sky’s the limit for him. He may not like me saying this, but the way he has bowled this year… You have to look at the way Ollie Robinson has bowled in Test cricket this year. There’s definitely a role for his sort of bowler.
He doesn’t miss. He’s as skilful as anyone around. I think if there’s a g for him, he would definitely do a great job.
He’s very humble and says that ship has sailed, but I don’t agree,” said Barnard. Bamber self-effacingly described himself as an average cricketer after taking match figures of 9 for 94 in Warwickshire’s title-clinching win over Leicestershire last week, but joked that he has enjoyed the attention since lifting the trophy. When reflecting on his personal achievements, Bamber emphasised the value of contributing to collective team goals rather than focusing solely on individual statistics.
“I’ve got a massive ego! It’s always nice for people to say nice stuff about you, of course. I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t the truth.
I don’t always know how to deal with it very well. You want, always, to contribute to the team. You want to impact the game and help your team progress and impact the game in key moments,” Bamber said.
“If you reflect on a number, it’s really the details of that when you feel like there’s been moments where you might have helped the group move towards a collective goal. They’re probably the most pleasing [achievements] for me personally, but it’s obviously a nice thing to think that you might have contributed significantly yourself,” he added. Looking ahead, Bamber expressed excitement about testing Warwickshire’s credentials against strong opposition.
His focus has shifted entirely to domestic success and helping the county maintain their championship-winning momentum in the seasons to come. “What I’m thinking about is how I can contribute to Warwickshire next year, and try to help us be successful going forward. “That’s what really makes me a little nervous and excited,” Bamber said.
