Dogra and Nasir earn a first-innings lead for Jammu & Kashmir

When Lone Nasir pulled a short ball over deep mid-wicket at 2:46 pm, the Jammu and Kashmir team, including head coach Ajay Sharma, jumped for joy. On the next ball, after Nasir leed to fire a four over the goal, the proval was stronger. Nasir even celebrated with a fist bump.
You can’t be blamed if you think they won the game. What hpened was that J&K took the lead against the rest of India in the first leg of the Irani Cup about an hour after it seemed unlikely. Just like the ROI on the first day, J&K suffered a medium-sized dip in the post-lunch session where it went from 138 for 4 to 166 for 8.
They were still 71 behind the RoI’s first innings total of 237. Nasir joined his Paras Dogra clan who fought. A strike on the third ball he faced – against Akash Deep, no less – sent the ball purring towards the mid-wicket rope.
Once the deficit fell below 50, Nasir started relying on his partner to give him more shots. And he began to revel. Nasir attempted a Manav Suthar delivery from outside off and swept it deep to mid-wicket.
In the same way, he also lifted the left-arm spinner to the extra cover. And when Dogra fell while J&K was leading by seven, Nasir launched a calculated attack that suddenly thwarted RoI’s plans. That’s not the way lower-order batsmen should do things.
For most of the day, RoI’s fast bowlers used short, short deliveries to intimidate the batsmen. Nasir wouldn’t let that hpen, as he showed with the two shots that gave J&K the upper hand. He also hit Mukesh Kumar for a sequence of 4, 6, 6 to canter to a 48-ball fifty.
Nasir is no mug with the bat. He considers himself a true bowling all-rounder. He was called up for the BCCI’s U23 camp in 2020, but it had to be canceled due to Covid-19.
He has been a regular participant in IPL tournaments for the last five years and was also a net bowler for Sunrisers Hyderabad for three seasons. If Auqib Nabi (on duty for India) and Yudhvir Singh (injured) had been available, Nasir would not have even played this Irani Cup. In fact, he was added to the team at the last minute and didn’t even have a jersey.
When he came to bat, J&K’s chances of taking the lead were hanging by a thread. When he was hit by a reverse ball from Akash Deep for a 58-ball 64, the roles were reversed. Paras Dogra scored a valiant 70, Karnataka v Jammu and Kashmir, Ranji Trophy, Final, Day 2, Hubballi, February 25, 2026. Nasir’s counter-attack might not have been possible without the strong contributions of Dogra and Abdul Samad.
As J&K continued the second day at 21 for 2, they faltered as fast bowlers continued to have their say on a surface that had a hint of brown but still had a green top. Mukesh Choudhary got a lot of seam and swing which led to the wicket of Shubham Khajuria in the second over of the day. After being denied a pound on a long ball, Choudhary bowled the same delivery, just a little fuller and a little further.
This prompted Khajuria to move away from his body and place him on the stumps. As Qamran Iqbal, who scored an unbeaten 160 in last year’s Ranji Trophy final, moved around the crease to unsettle the batters, Choudhary released him with a sharp leg hop that he could only manage behind his glove. As a result, Dogra and Samad found themselves in the middle at 37 for 4 while the bowlers were breathing fire.
Dogra especially found himself in all sorts of awkward positions whenever Choudhary or Akash Deep threw the ball into his own half. He started only on the 16th ball he faced and was clean-shaven from the start. Seeing a 138 kmph bumper from Akash Deep, Dogra looked away and crouched down, keeping his bat tilted like a periscope.
The ball was shot at the tail end but landed just short of the attacking gutter. Dogra’s bowling against the pace at the start of his innings belied his first-class numbers – over 10,000 runs, an average of over 48. But he persevered .
Dogra and Samad felt comfortable as soon as Choudhary and Akash Deep stopped attacking. They looked after spinners Suthar and Saransh Jain and with Mukesh Kumar struggling to get the ball to a consistent spot in the first session, they helped J&K score over 100 runs before lunch. Samad mixed caution and enterprise as he reached fifty off 80 balls.
It was a model he used successfully, scoring 748 runs (most of them for J&K) in the Ranji Trophy last year. His innings included a huge six off Suthar. Mukesh Choudhary picked three wickets but it was not enough to prevent Chennai Super Kings from losing, Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2022, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, May 12, 2022. But like Shikhar Mohan on the opening day, Samad fell in the second over after lunch and edged Mukesh Kumar perfectly, undoing all his hard work.
This opening allowed Choudhary to remove wicketkeeper Kanhaiya Wadhawan before Mukesh Kumar stumped Abid Mushtaq lbw, with DRS unable to help the latter. When Akash Deep caught Sahil Lotra in the gorge, it looked like RoI would esce with a lead of around 50. The lack of batting support at the other end was a blessing for Dogra.
Although he continued to jump and defend against Choudhary, Dogra managed to reduce the deficit and complete his half-century off 113 balls. Eleven balls later, he used his feet against Jain to lift him to his first six balls. He then hit Jain at mid-wicket for a four.
Dogra added 64 for the ninth wicket with Nasir before placing a short ball to fine leg. This gave Choudhary a deserved five-wicket haul. Nasir’s enterprising 48-run stand on the last wicket with Sunil Kumar ended RoI’s hopes of a slender lead.
With more than an hour to play before stumps occurred, the RoI batters took a very cautious proach, which resulted in Mohan going down easily in the second dig. Sunil has once again found his limits. These 15 overs that J&K played showed that the conditions were still not easy to beat.
Certainly not as easily as Nasir had defeated them. Nasir Lone near the outfield during Irani Trophy, Jammu and Kashmir vs Rest of India, Irani Trophy, Srinagar, October 1, 2026. Early success after lunch for Jammu and Kashmir! And Mohan was disciplined in allowing himself to be lulled by a missed shot.
At the peak of his bowling mark, Nasir just signaled his deep square leg to move to the left. Perhs played into the head of Mohan, who expected a short ball and was beaten into the goal area. Nasir then throws it wide and wide.
Mohan could have left it all day. He lies low in the crease, simply leans back and moves his hands away from his body as he rides. In the end it just cuts his ass.
Luckily for J&K and Nasir, he has his front foot behind the line. Snped! And J&K had a brief scare when the umpire raised his finger late on. Sunil throws the ball just outside the fourth ball and flicks it away.
Sangwan moves it away from the body only because it is tilted outward. But in the end, with very little footwork, he manages to give Wadhwan an outside advantage. J&K cheers at the obvious noise but turns around and sees the unmoved batsman.
Until the referee raised his finger. An early goal for the hosts, exactly what they would have wanted after winning the toss. While catching for the second slide, Gharami is thrown out of Chely! Nasir lands way out at 124.5 km/h and punches it away.
Gharami stays behind and tries to move it away from the body. Gets a thick outside edge and Samad makes no mistake. A little more bounce also helped the bowler.
A quality first wicket for Nasir and it’s a great way to get on the board!! Caught with one hand by the goalkeeper as he fell down the side of his leg. Sarfaraz falls after it looked like he was going to score a big hit.
But wait, the umpires convene to confirm whether the catch was made cleanly. The first replay from the goalkeeper’s perspective shows that Wadhawan took it well despite juggling the ball. So Sarfaraz departs.
He wanted to hit that short ball that hit the outside leg and finished, with his underhand almost slipping off the bat. Bonus wicket for J&K, I really got it!! Sliced to short cover.
After a few frustrating deliveries, the pants fall down. The man was placed nearby, which is unusual but works for J&K. He decides to advance down the field again and cuts hard down the middle on that length, opening the face of the bat.
But it is hit out of the air and lands perfectly in the hands of the tight defender. Nazir delivers two heavy blows to RoI. A flying catch from Samad in a wide slide ends Smaran’s stay! Given the marauding mood Smaran was in, he headed the ball wide and wide offside.
Gets a strong outside edge and Samad takes it to his left to finish a great shot. End of a practical partnership for the rest of India Jaffa! Jain is stunned and looks at the stump which is fixed backwards.
Lotra throws it and puts it down. He lands and stands up massively. Jain pushes forward to pass the ball and plays well inside the line of the ball due to the pike and turn.
Then he sees the ball leave the post. The rest of India is collsing again. A diving yorker! Is there an inside edge?
A Sunil starrer, but J&K thinks a lot before reviewing. He floats it completely and swings it to hit Suthar on his front toe, which is adjacent to the stumps. The only question is whether there is a bat involved.
Bat hits pad, not the ball. Eyes trained on tracking the ball, which meant it would hit the leg. Sunil took a lot more wickets with his bowling today but here is his second one so far.
Suthar is massively dispointed about this and hangs around over tea on the first day. Clean catch from Samad and he makes up for the loss from a few overs ago. Thrown straight outside, an additional steal that Akash Deep can’t resist.
It pears to grow large on the outside but has a thick outer edge. He moves quickly to the left of the first slip where Samad quickly goes to the pocket. The end of the 39-point score knocked him to the ground!!
Choudhary leaves the first ball after a drink. Sunil has his third wicket. He throws this to a length and swings it to the left batsman.
Choudhary had great swing as he swung his bat almost blindly. The ball crashed into the stumps but it went away!! Caught with one hand by the goalkeeper as he fell down the side of his leg.

Sunil has his third wicket. He throws this to a length and swings it to the left batsman. Choudhary had great swing as he swung his bat almost blindly.
The ball crashed into the stumps due to the sharp rebound and was caught behind! Iqbal doesn’t think he managed to win and criticizes. Choudhary makes it short and the ball ends up just outside leg.
Iqbal runs down the lane within the line of the ball and then jumps to try to push it away. He is obviously surprised. His bottom hand comes loose, but the ball grazes the left glove holding the bat.
Snicko proves it and Iqbal gives his marching orders. J&K slips further and also loses a review. Pant celebrates a caught chance, but the umpire remains unmoved. And Pant reviews .
Choudhary flicked the ball a length and just outside. There was no movement off the field. Pundir blocked, very close with his bat and pad.
So was Pant convinced because the bat hit the pad? We’ll know soon. The third umpire reviews the replays and observes a second rise on UltraEdge as the ball also touches the outside edge after the bat hits the pad.
Pundir falls as J&K loses their first set which is gobbled up by Pant!! He casually throws the ball away after taking it. A tame dismissal in the end.
Akash Deep bowled a short ball to middle and outside off and Nazir seemed to move out of the way. But he ended up swinging his bat horizontally. The ball reached the top edge and flew to Pant, who stepped forward and took a simple catch. A butcher and it’s almost a repeat of the previous ball that gets rid of Khajuria!
Choudhary throws it a little fuller and further, sets it down and makes it move in a single movement. Khajuria puts her front foot forward again and hits her racket away from her body in defense. Ends up reaching out.
An inward movement means that the ball deviates from the inside edge towards the stumps. Early wicket for the rest of India and the challenge for Jammu and Kashmir becomes more difficult. Out of? The skier was caught in the deep, thin leg.
DOGRA has been gone for 75 years, Choudhary for five years! Halfway length on middle. Dogra was at the goal line, jumped back and shot.
I wanted to hit it into the ground, maybe just behind the square, but the top edge brought it up. The ball went straight to the defender. Skip gets a pat on the back after bringing his condition closer to parity. This is the breakthrough!
A soft dismissal and Samad would blame himself. Mukesh lands the ball just outside the offside and makes it a little away. Invites you to drive, even if it’s not exactly a driving length.
Samad pushes it hard, catching a thick outside edge that heads towards Sangwan at the gully where he takes it with a dive to the right. End of 101 partnership with J&K, now 99 behind. It’s eerily similar now to yesterday – half-centurion Mohan comes out in the second after lunch. A fourth wicket for Choudhary and he celebrates!
Wadhawan’s hesitation costs him dearly, but the umpires want to be sure the catch is successful. He places it full length in the middle and outwards and at an angle. Wadhawan steps forward and just hooks his bat to get it past the rope.
In the end he only pockets it until the first slip, where Smaran presses it under the ball with his fingers. Some replays confirm that he had his fingers under it and didn’t touch it. A long and nervous wait for Wadhawan’s results with an unfavorable outcome for him. Huge chime and gift!
Mushtaq immediately criticizes and I think he threw the outside leg. Mukesh bowls it full leg and it swings on. Mushtaq returns a hook to cut it off but is hit on the inside edge and quite low on the front pad.
The pitches were right on the line, but they would have swung and cut through the stumps, the ball tracking shows. The umpire calls and Mushtaq has to step back for a two-ball blob, although J&K remain behind. Gully is close and the ball goes straight to him! Sangwan had to take a step back, carried by the momentum of the ball.
Took it around the belly. There was a floating half volley right outside the door. Lotra went for the full blow, but hit it too late, so RoI was over 50 points ahead and could now put Plumb in the lead!
A touch of backwards momentum in the game. Oh, Nasir knows he’s done and backs away, but then he remembers he can use DRS. Akash Deep presents this, a touch of inner movement.
Nasir stands rooted to the goal area and tries to get the ball over the line with his bat turned towards the middle. The ball misses and is hit low on the right knee. Chasing the ball is a mere formality as it brings back three reds.
Don’t take anything away from this Nasir counterattack. With this, J&K finished with a lead of 41 points. This is the breakthrough! A soft dismissal and Samad would blame himself.
