He said subsequent scans confirmed a “minor tear” and that he would likely need “about a week of recovery” before he could play again. Fisher joined the T20I team in Wellington as bowling coach and was initially named for just the third T20I but will remain with the team for the remainder of the series. He was initially expected to feature in the series against India A.

Fast bowler Brett Randell was called up to the New Zealand senior team for the second match as a replacement for Fisher. Fast bowlers Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson, who will also miss the remainder of the T20I series, remain on track to be available for the ODI series, which begins in Auckland on November 4. Both are subject to “scheduled workload management”, meaning fast bowlers are rotated in and out of the New Zealand squad for the current tour.

During the second T20I, Henry felt pain in his right quadriceps and scans showed he had discovered a mild tear and would require one to two weeks of recovery time. Jamieson will remain in Wellington and be available for the Ford Trophy second-round match in Canterbury on Saturday before moving to New Zealand for the ODIs on Monday. “We are dispointed with Lockie and Matt,” said head coach Rob Walter.

“Injuries are a normal part of international cricket but that doesn’t make things any easier when you have to miss games. “Fortunately for Matt, his big summer schedule has already seen him sit out the rest of the T20Is and we hope he will continue to play a key role in the ODIs. “I know Lockie was looking forward to playing in front of a sell-out crowd at Eden Park tomorrow but he is determined to return for the ODIs.” New Zealand have already lost the five-match T20I series against India 0-3.

The remaining two matches will be played in Auckland on October 30 and Hamilton on November 1 before the series moves to five ODIs.
