Fleming’s newly pointed support team includes several potential future Test coaches, including Richard Dawson, James Foster and Marcus Trescodick, who took on the interim role earlier this year.
Jonathan Trott, another former England player, will coach the England Lions this winter and Mike Yardy has been named national batting leader at ECB. “One of my strengths is that I believe the national team should be coached first and foremost by a national representative,” Fleming said in a speech on BBC Radio 5 Live. “I’m grateful for the opportunity but there will be some developments on the coaching front and you can see from our staff that there are some really important people who have come back into the system and I’m really hpy about that and look forward to working with them, but it [the development of England’s coaches] is really a priority.” Dawson left his post as Glamorgan head coach earlier this month to take on a dual role as national head of spin bowling and Fleming’s assistant, and Rob Key, England’s chief executive, has suggested he will be “close to the top of that list” when it comes to naming Fleming’s successor in the coming years.
Fleming also confirmed his intention to bring some county coaches into the England squad if their schedules allow further development. “It is also a goal that there are also district coaches who are introduced at times and that there are also former players who are also invited back,” he said. “It’s a really inclusive and enjoyable way of using what’s there but also pushing forward what should be pushed forward in the county game and the English game.” Fleming will not take charge in his first series until England travel to South Africa in December. Trescodick will replace him in the win against Pakistan in August/September.
Fleming traveled to Britain last month and toured the counties on a fact-finding mission. He said he would do the same before next summer’s Ashes series, in complete contrast to McCullum. Marcus Trescodick speaks to the media before the first Test, England v Pakistan, Headingley, Men’s 1st Test, August 18, 2026 “Yes, I will be there,” said Fleming. “I’ve really enjoyed this year meeting a lot of the boys I played with who are now in positions – either coaching or boss – in the counties.
It was good to meet these guys and get a good idea of the current state of the county game… This will be an important part of the players’ development. “The pitches are becoming a bit friendlier [in Test cricket],” he said. “The games end in a maximum of three and a half to four days.
With the advent of walk-ins, there is no longer the decay of many wickets that you used to see, so it becomes a lot more difficult [for spinners]. “What you are seeing is the rise of the part-time spinners: in our case the Bethells, the Lawrences and the Roots. And then when you combine that with four seamers, that’s enough offense – or more than enough – to get through a Test match, so the dynamic has really changed at the moment.
