Player of the match Fraser-McGurk set the tone with a stunning attack that put him on course to breaking his own world record for fastest List A century. He struck out 22 in the second inning against Tom Straker and 16 in the fourth inning against Tom Whitney. His onslaught continued in the sixth over when he hit Hayden Kerr for a six and a four to add to his fifty from 14 balls.
He was four balls faster than his previous record of 18 balls set in 2023 and just three balls shy of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s world record. He is now ranked fourth in the list of the fastest A-list fifties in the world. His century mark from 29 balls was within reach as he hit four fours and a six off his next eight balls to move from 22 to 75.
But Queensland ctain and four-Test player Mitchell Swepson dashed all hopes when he dismissed Fraser-McGurk in the ninth over with five balls to spare for a run by just two. Unable to hit his quick legs from the top of the stumps, Fraser-McGurk misdirected one just before mid-off and narrowly avoided being snatched away by another as it slid down the leg side. Fraser-McGurk opted to bowl steadily from then on as he and Mackenzie Harvey posted an opening score of 129 from just 11.3 overs before the latter failed on 46 off 35.
Fraser-McGurk hit consecutive sixes against Whitney in the 14th over to take her into the 90s before working her way to her century via singles. He hit two fours and a six off Jack Clayton’s part-time left-arm orthodox before being bowled out for 122 as he attempted to sweep the left-arm seam of Kerr. Fraser-McGurk’s love affair with the Karen Rolton Oval is clear from her impressive record there.
He now has two centuries and an 88 in six innings, with an average of 68.66 and a score of 204.97. Notably, he averaged just 20.55 in his 32 List A innings elsewhere, including seven ODIs, and was batting at 112.66 with a half-century when he made his List A debut at the MCG for Victoria in 2019. In comparison, McSweeney was pedestrian as he entered his century with ten boundaries but no sixes.
He shared a 115-run fifth-wicket stand with Jake Lehmann, who contributed 58 off 46. McSweeney fell to Oli Patterson with 10 balls remaining in the innings, dashing SA’s hopes of surpassing 400. But that didn’t matter as Johnson put a huge dent in Queensland’s powerplay pursuit.
His extra speed forced Hugh Weibgen to make a mistake. The former Australian Under-19 side were down nine at half-time, scoring one shot at half-time after making several centuries in the last two innings. Four overs later, Hugo Burdon missed another short ball from Johnson to Fraser-McGurk in deep square, having run to 29 from 14 balls.
Between Johnson’s punches, Wes Agar shook Jack Clayton’s stump. Henry Thornton had promoted Hayden Kerr, who was caught on the power play in the final, so the chase was doomed 73 to 4. Hearne did his best to continue the pursuit, but he lacked willing partners.
Max Bryant made 26 but became Johnson’s third victim. Jimmy Peirson made 45 but fell to the leg-spin of Lloyd Pope, who finished with three wickets. To muted cheers, Hearne released his second 100 list.
He finished with 121 off 104 with nine fours and three sixes before becoming Johnson’s fifth victim, swinging the first ball cleanly off the fence in the 41st over.
