Gqeberha, Day 4, October 21, 2026 Gareth Batty, the head coach who led Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024, is leaving the club to join the Chennai Super Kings as assistant to his former Worcestershire teammate Zaheer Khan. Batty, 49, took up the role at Surrey in 2021, immediately after ending his playing career with the club. In 2025 they followed up their historic treble by finishing second to Nottinghamshire, but this season’s Championship campaign proved more difficult.
The club flirted with relegation before the final rounds of the season, eventually finishing in seventh place and also failing to reach the latter stages of the T20 Blast or One-Day Cup. Batty also served as an assistant coach with the Oval Invincibles for their title-winning campaign in 2025 and then joined Mumbai Indians affiliate MI London in this year’s rebranded competition. However, he is now shifting his allegiance to IPL rivals CSK as part of a radical behind-the-scenes staff overhaul following the pointment of the franchise’s long-time head coach Stephen Fleming to the England Test post and subsequent recruitment of assistants Eric Simons and James Foster.
Batty’s departure ends a 21-year association with Surrey, for whom he played early in his career from 1998 to 2001 and then returned in 2010. Before becoming head coach, he also ctained the club from 2015 to 2017 before handing over the reins to current starter Rory Burns. “Thank you doesn’t seem to be enough for how much Surrey means to me,” Batty said recently.
“It has been a privilege to serve this great club and share in its successes and challenges. “This new journey is very exciting for my family and I with CSK in the IPL and I can’t wait to get started.” Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, admitted it could be difficult to maintain the “expectations and traditions” of England’s best-resourced cricket country, but praised Batty for doing just that during his long association with the club. “I have known and worked with Gareth for many years and in that time he has shown exceonal commitment to this club,” said Stewart.
“As a player and then as ctain, he always put the team first and played an important role in taking the club forward. “He has passion and knowledge for the game and is determined to get the best out of himself and those around him. When he moved to coaching, he brought the same qualities with him.
“His success in leading the team to three consecutive county championship titles is a reflection of his hard work, understanding of the players and passionate desire to win.”
