Australia v New Zealand 2nd Test, Day One, at the WACA, Perth, Thursday 20 November 1997 Matthew Gilkes celebrates his century, Victoria v South Australia, One-Day Cup, Junction Oval, 12 October 2026 South Australia 311 (Gilkes 127, O’Neill 3-47, Anlezark 3-61) defeated Victoria 241 (Peake 73, Blackford 50, Agar 3-35, Wadia 3-37) by 70 runs Matthew Gilkes’ first century at state level and impressive bowling from Indian-born spinner Jerrssis Wadia along with Wes Agar helped South Australia to a convincing 70-run one-day win over Victoria. Victoria were primed for a win on 312 at Junction Oval on Monday night and looked to have a chance when youngsters Ollie Peake and Liam Blackford combined to form a top-class partnership. Victoria were dismissed for 241 from 43.5 overs after two-time reigning Sheffield Shield champions SA began this season with an innings victory over Victoria at the same venue two days earlier.

Gilkes, who moved from NSW this season, saved SA at No. 5 with 127 off 115 balls, with 13 fours and four sixes – his first interstate ton in any format. Wadia, who came to Australia as a teenager, earned a BBL contract with the Adelaide Strikers last summer. The finger turn of his left arm was crucial in slowing down Peake and Blackford and eventually Wadia’s pressure led to the crucial breakthrough.

He was the pick of the bowlers in the match with figures of 3 for 37 from 10 overs while Agar also took three critical wickets. Peake top-scored for Victoria with 73 off 74 balls, including four fours and three sixes. Victoria were close to making the score 85 for 4 when Peake and Blackford combined for a score of 114 runs, making the chase interesting.

But Wadia turned the screw and brought Blackford down twice in the 34th minute. Blackford also had the chance of being eliminated from the squad in the following games, but Wadia’s hard work ultimately paid off. Peake tried to push the pace again with a shot fired at Wes Agar and managed to reach Jake Fraser-McGurk on the boundary.

This left Victoria with 199 for 5 in the 37th over and another sneaky chance. But when Glenn Maxwell was Wadia’s third victim of just seven, SA were in control. Blackford made 50 from 69 balls, with a four and a six, before Nathan McAndrew had him caught and bowled for the eighth wicket.

Sam Elliott did not bat after suffering a hand injury while fielding and Victoria’s innings ended at 241 for 9 in 43.5 overs. After Victoria won the toss, SA were at their best at 16-3. Gilkes then combined with Henry Hunt (42) for a 104-run stand that steadied their innings.

Jake Lehmann made 33 and when Gilkes was dismissed in the 41st over, SA were well placed at 234 for 6. Ctain Ben Manenti then contributed a quick-fire 35 off 26 balls and Henry Thornton also swung the bat for 25 off 15 to take the total even further. Fergus O’Neill and Austin Anlezark took three wickets each as SA were dismissed for 311 in 49.3 overs.
