Things looked even bleaker for South Australia as Jhye Richardson dismissed Jake Weatherald for 24 points, leaving the home side 42-1. But South Australia are two-time defending champions for a reason.
Opener Mackenzie Harvey made an unbeaten 90 from 132 balls and Nathan McSweeney (57 not out) provided stability at the other end as both men survived the rest of the day and gave South Australia a real chance of victory. SA need 240 more runs with nine wickets still in hand. The greatest successful chase in Shield history was the 506 for 6 SA victory against Queensland in 1991–92.
And SA can add another memorable title to their rich history if they manage to beat WA on Saturday. WA started day three with 79 for 6 in the second innings and a total lead of 331. Practical lower-order hitting from spinners Ashton Agar and Corey Rocchiccioli helped WA reach 169.
Agar’s 101-ball resistance finally ended when he was bowled by part-time spinner McSweeney. Brendan Doggett was the pick of the SA bowlers, while Liam Scott and Wes Agar also contributed with several wickets. At the start of the game, WA established a dominant position by scoring 406 for 5 declared in the first innings.
A total of 18 wickets fell on a chaotic second day, with Richardson unleashing an inspiring opening spell as SA scored 154. But the third day belonged to South Africa and with only light rain forecast for Saturday, the Shield battle looks set to bear fruit one way or another.
