Tendulkar was pointed ctain of India on August 10, 1996, at the age of 23 years and 109 days, replacing Mohammad Azharuddin.
His first pearances in this role included the Sahara Cup series against Pakistan and the limited-overs Singer Cup competition involving Sri Lanka. He was sacked in 1997 due to poor team results, returned for a second term from 1998 and finally resigned in 2000 after a largely unsuccessful term. His winning percentage as ctain was 16 percent in Tests and 31 percent in ODIs.
“It was a great honor to lead the team as ctain. However, I didn’t always have the freedom to choose my own team. The BCCI is a much more professional organization today than it was in the 1990s.
Indian cricket also went through a particularly dark phase during this time,” Tendulkar said on Reddit AMA. One of Tendulkar’s first assignments as ctain was a Test series against South Africa from December 21, 1996 to January 30, 1997, which India lost 2-0. The 1999-2000 tour of Australia also took place under his leadership before he stepped down from this role.
Who are Tendulkar’s favorite dishes? Despite his own difficult experience leading India, Tendulkar has a clear admiration for the groups that came after him. Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni have transformed Indian cricket in the years since the end of Tendulkar’s second term and he has put them at the top of his personal list.
“When it comes to my favorites, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni are at the top of my list!!,” said Tendulkar. Under Ganguly, India reached the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup, finishing second to hosts South Africa. Dhoni then led India to the 2011 ODI World Cup title at home, a triumph that completed what the Ganguly era had set in motion.
