“If it were up to me it wouldn’t end like this” – James Anderson confirms Lancashire exit (Source – Photo by Alex Davidson/) Lancashire have confirmed they will not be offering James Anderson a new contract, ending his 25-year association with his boyhood country. England’s all-time leading wicket-taker learned of the decision in a meeting on October 19, 2026, and the club made the announcement public on October 25, 2026. Anderson’s England career had already come to an end in July 2024 when he played a farewell Test against the West Indies at Lord’s.

He then worked for Lancashire, taking up the position in the 2025 season at Old Trafford, the stadium which has an end named in his honour. It remains to be seen whether he will retire from cricket or seek a contract with another county. Minutes after the club’s statement, Anderson shared his reaction on Instagram.

“I have supported Lancashire since I was a child so playing for them for 25 years was a dream come true. I always found it special to play at Old Trafford and I have some incredible memories, including the honor of being ctain. If it had been up to me it wouldn’t have turned out this way, but I wish the players and fans all the best for the future,” Anderson wrote on Instagram. The news made it clear that Anderson, now 44, did not see the manner of his departure as his own decision, although he maintained his generous words towards the club and its supporters.

Why did Lancashire decide not to extend Anderson’s contract? Lancashire’s new management team made this decision as part of a wider effort to restructure the club following a difficult 2025 County Championship season. County finished second in Division Two, a result well below expectations as they were considered strong contenders for promotion before the campaign began.

Director of cricket Paul Farbrace and chief executive Richard Kenyon have both recently been tasked with rebuilding the team and setting a new direction. Farbrace confirmed that he and Kenyon met with Anderson on October 19 to personally inform him that his contract would not be renewed. Farbrace acknowledged Anderson’s role in the game.

“Jimmy is without a doubt the greatest bowler that Lancashire and England have produced. He has been a fantastic competitor throughout his career with exceonal skills and an unwavering commitment to setting the highest standards in every locker room he has competed in. I would like to thank Jimmy for everything he has given to Lancashire Cricket throughout his career.

His contribution to the club was immense both on and off the pitch and he leaves a lasting legacy. We have great respect for what he has achieved and will always be proud of the fact that he represented Lancashire for so many years,” Farbrace said. What’s next for Anderson after he leaves Lancashire?

On the international stage, Anderson finished 188 Tests with 704 wickets, a record for any bowler who is not a specialist spinner. His record for Lancashire is equally remarkable. Since his county debut in 2001, he has taken 443 wickets in 112 county championship games and was part of the team that won the county championship title in 2011.

In List A cricket he took 83 wickets in 61 matches and in T20 cricket he took 50 wickets in 40 pearances, highlighting the extent of his contribution across all formats.
