The Men in Blue found themselves in deep trouble at 112 for six in the 15th over but still managed to reach the 181-run target thanks to a blistering 68-run attack in the last 4.5 overs.
Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy played bold attacks to bring India home, with Naman Dhir also instrumental in the success of the fightback. Dinesh Karthik highlighted how India’s lower-order batters turned the fight around despite the initial stutter. The former India wicketkeeper commented on the remarkable turnaround and the quality of cricket on display at the venue.
“At no point did the chase give the impression that India had no chance. I always felt that if a man behaved well, it would hpen. Naman Dhir, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, they were phenomenal.
It’s just great to see India’s top five not doing much and India still pulling off a heist in front of New Zealand,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz. How did India stage its remarkable comeback? New Zealand dominated for most of the game, with only India’s early powerplay offering any significant resistance to their control.
Karthik praised the visitors’ composure and strength in the closing stages and particularly praised Varma’s ability to accelerate under increasing pressure. The Christchurch stadium had produced some convincing cricket thanks to the balance between bat and ball, keeping the contest perfectly even until the final. “With the exceon of the first power play, New Zealand were in control for most of the game.
It’s just phenomenal to see the kind of strength and composure. Tilak Varma, I thought he started off pretty calmly. The way he managed to push himself to the limit under pressure,” Karthik added.
What made the pitch and final overs so compelling? Karthik pointed out that scores between 160 and 180 make for the most entertaining T20 cricket, where the bowler and batter are constantly in a tactical battle. The drama unfolded right up to the penultimate delivery, with Varma’s intensity and determination clearly evident in the latter stages of the chase.
“I vouch for these pitches. 160-180 is the best type in T20 cricket. There’s a bit of cat and mouse, the bowlers have the say.
There were big boundaries, we saw the running between the wickets, the scrum, the confusion. Tilak Varma was angry with his partner till the penultimate ball for not executing the second ball, what a drama,” said Karthik.
