Josh Inglis (Credit: Robert Cianflone/) The third day at Newlands, October 29, 2026, produced a moment the likes of which Australian cricket had never seen before. Wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis scored 102 runs against South Africa in the third Test at Ce Town, becoming the first Australian to score more than a century in all three international formats. He reached the milestone with a reverse sweep off Simon Harmer after facing 132 balls and hitting 11 fours and two sixes.

When Inglis arrived Australia were 184 for 3, Cameron Green had just left on 65. He and Alex Carey put together a 185-run partnership for the fifth wicket before the total rose to 185 for 4. Harmer eventually had Inglis caught for 102, by which time Australia had overtaken South Africa’s first innings total of 329, securing a valuable lead.

For this game, Australia made four changes to their eleven, bringing in Inglis, Cooper Connolly, Nathan Lyon and Cameron Green. Inglis last peared in a Test during the 2025 Ashes, a g of almost a year. A fractured finger, picked up while playing the ODI series against South Africa, had kept him out of the first two Tests of the current series, making his century on return all the more significant.

Why do these hundred place Inglis’ art above all other Australians? Inglis now has multiple centuries in Test cricket, ODI cricket and T20 internationals, a combination no Australian batsman had achieved before. Two ODI hundreds and two T20I centuries, added to his two Test tones, give him the complete package in all formats.

Aaron Finch accumulated 17 ODI centuries and two T20I centuries over the course of his long international career, but never reached three-figure Test scores. Finch Art, Glenn Maxwell is the other prominent name who came close but didn’t make it. Maxwell has five T20I centuries and four in ODIs.

However, he could only score one ton in Test cricket. What is the background to Inglis’ second Test 100? Inglis scored his first Test century against Sri Lanka in 2025, that innings in Galle.

Newlands’ knock is his second in the format and came in only his third Test match against South Africa. Inglis, who returned from injury in the third Test against South Africa, has now achieved what neither Maxwell nor Finch managed in their careers.
