NSW reached 371 for 8 thanks to Konstas’ monster batting combined with useful contributions from Josh Philippe, Jack Edwards and Lachlan Shaw. In response, Sam Whiteman plundered 116 from 113 balls to give WA a faint hope of chasing the mammoth goal of victory. But with spinners Ashton Agar and Ashton Turner the only other WA batters to score 40, the home side fell well short of the required score of 293 in 46.3 overs. The result left WA with a 0-3 record and all but ended their title hopes with just three games left in the season.
NSW moved into second place with a 3-1 record, but it remains to be seen how long they will have Konstas on their plate and in the one-day ranks given his strong form. He burst onto the international stage in December 2024 when he made a memorable Boxing Day Test debut against India, scoring 60 runs in his first knock. Konstas failed to get past 25 in his next nine Test innings, with his last pearance on the baggy green coming against the West Indies in July last year.
The talented opener has worked hard on his game over the last 15 months and it was on full display on Saturday when he hit 15 fours and four sixes in a masterful performance. And with Australia still clamoring for an opening game to make their mark ahead of a busy Test schedule, it seems only a matter of time before Konstas wears the baggy green again. Whiteman was brave in WA’s pursuit, but he simply lacked the necessary support.
Jack Nisbet made 3 for 47 for NSW, including Whiteman’s crucial scalp in the 46th over, while Bryce Jackson contributed with 2 for 58. A rare highlight for WA occurred earlier in the day when Agar took to the air to take a superb one-handed catch at backward point, removing Ben Dwarshuis for 20.
