South Australia have recovered from Jake Weatherald’s ill-fated chance to take control of their opening Sheffield Shield game against Victoria. On Thursday they reached 352 for 6, a lead of 108, after beating Victoria for 244 towards the end of the day. Weatherald crashed into the fence while chasing a ball across the field before lunch at Junction Oval on Wednesday.

At the end of the first day he only had six balls left before Victorian debutant Harry Hoekstra had him caught for a duck. “Obviously he hit the wall a little too hard. “We thought he hit his neck and not his head, but he complained after the game last night – he felt a little sluggish, he had a bad headache,” SA coach Ryan Harris said of Weatherald.

“He probably would have liked to do [a concussion test] before he hit – he felt good when he hit, he said.” Matthew Gilkes was airlifted from Adelaide on Thursday morning as a concussed sub. Harris didn’t know if Weatherald would miss any games. Weatherald was left out of the Australian squad in August following the shock opening defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin.

SA started again on Thursday 4-1 and relied on opener Henry Hunt’s 71 and 90 goals from No.6 Jake Lehmann to gradually wrest the initiative away from the home team. Manenti and Noah McFadyen then combined for an unbeaten 89-run stand for the seventh wicket. Manenti will have a nervous night’s sleep at 92 and McFadyen had 46.

“I wasn’t expecting to be up 108 points. [I thought] if we could get to a 60-70 lead at the end of the day, that would have been good,” Harris said. After top scoring with 45 for the home side, Hoekstra continued his excellent Shield debut with three more wickets and led the Victorian attack with 4 for 57.
