MI has not yet announced his replacement. The move is part of a wider overhaul of the franchise’s coaching staff: MI replaced head coach Mahela Jayawardene with Kieron Pollard at the start of October. Malinga had joined MI in October 2023 ahead of the 2024 IPL, while Mhambrey and Hopkinson had joined ahead of the 2025 season.
This was Mhambrey’s second spell with MI, having previously been there from 2010 to 2017. “Mumbai Indians express our sincere gratitude to Lasith, Paras and Carl for their contributions to the team and the entire MI family,” the franchise said recently. “Their dedication, the relationships they built and the memories they created will always be part of our journey.” MI was the first team to win the IPL five times – 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 – but failed to qualify for the finals in the last six seasons.
They finished ninth out of ten teams in IPL 2026. The IPL 2027 player auction will take place on December 16 in Goa and the deadline for teams to release and lock in players is November 15.
