In ril 2025, NZC announced a partnership with US-based True North Sports (TNS) Ventures, led by MLC co-founders Sameer Mehta and Vijay Srinivasan, to help manage one of two new teams ahead of the 2027 season. As part of the agreement, NZC was expected to provide operational and performance support to the company. “First of all, I would like to say that I admire the efforts and aspirations behind the partnership with TNS,” NZC CEO Geoff Allott said recently.
“There is a lot of potential in the US market, but after further evaluating the opportunities, we do not believe the time is right for us to pursue this path.” The decision to reverse this agreement arises from NZC’s need to focus its resources on opportunities in New Zealand before expanding overseas. The start of the highly anticipated NZ20, the men’s and women’s T20 league set to replace the existing Super Smash, has also been pushed back to December 2027, rather than the original January 2027 schedule. “Our immediate priority is to continue to invest in strengthening cricket in New Zealand and perfecting the best possible high-performance environment for our players and teams,” Allott said.
“I would like to thank the co-founders of TNS and MLC, Sameer Mehta and Vijay Srinivasan, for giving us the opportunity to explore the opportunity and their support in reaching this mutual agreement. We wish them all the best for the future of the MLC and are committed to keeping the lines of communication open. » New South Wales and Victoria have already partnered with Washington Freedom and the San Francisco Unicorns in the MLC, but the deal with the NZC was on a deeper scale. Rachin Ravindra, Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Tim Seifer and Lockie Ferguson are among the New Zealand players who are regulars in the MLC.
