Sikandar Raza didn’t mince his words after Zimbabwe lost by 19 runs to Afghanistan in Sharjah on Thursday to concede the T20I series.

He cited his teammates’ “complacency” after the 5-4 win over Afghanistan in the fourth game as his biggest complaint. “I’ll talk about it in the locker room,” he promised. “I won’t say it like I told you,” he finished, his voice suggesting a smile that wasn’t really there.

“For me, before we go into detail [about the game] – and I will talk about it in the locker room. The hardest thing to bear was the complacency I saw from some of the boys,” Raza said with anger evident in his voice after his 106 in 56 balls failed to prevent Azmatullah Omarzai’s 116 in 50 balls from landing on the winning side. “[At 5 for 4] some boys probably calculated that it would be a maximum of 130, 140 at the end of 20 overs.

Some of the things I saw on the field today definitely hurt me and I’ll talk about it in the locker room because, look, it can hpen, but I think that’s where you have to be really strong mentally and say, “No, the game is never over until it’s over.” We still have a lot of work to do and I will be the one to get the job done.” “Before we analyze the game with batting or bowling, I think I felt that in the middle today and it’s something that needs to be addressed – not taking this game for granted because he can fight back and today is a great example.” Even halfway through the Afghan leg, Zimbabwe was leading by a score of 45 to 5. And after Omarzai and Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai (52 in 27 balls) took Afghanistan to 221 for 7, Zimbabwe hit back, none stronger than Raza himself.

“When chasing 222, the most important thing for me was to keep my emotions under control because the way we behaved in the first innings hurt me,” Raza said. “So when we went to bat, my goal was to win the game from every position. That was our motto and in my head I was just wondering how best to go about my business and hoping the other batsmen would help so we could win the game.

“Till the last two overs [when they needed 46 off 12] we supported each other to win the match. But yeah, I think we left too much for ourselves. “Some of the things I saw on the field today definitely hurt me and I’ll talk about it in the locker room.” “Some of the things I saw on the field today definitely hurt me and I’ll talk about it in the locker room.”
