It’s also important that we end the year with success.” West Indies have won three Tests in the current World Test Championship cycle, one in the previous two series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan before the one in Dhaka, but no series. They want to make it here, but Sammy expected Bangladesh coach Phil Simmons to make things difficult for the visiting team. “One thing I know about Phil is that he’s not going to make it easy for me,” Sammy said.
“He wants to win as well. They also have their own goals in the WTC. But I’m pretty sure that with what I see in the boys – the hunger, the determination, the willingness to work and the attention to detail – whatever awaits us in Sylhet, we will be ready to end this Test cycle with an away win in Bangladesh and they are not easy opponents to beat at home.
“Before we started this [series] they were fourth in the Test championship after winning [a Test] against Australia, so we are very aware of what is at stake. As a group, we look forward to achieving our goals set in Barbados at the start of the WTC cycle. “Sammy pointed out that the deployment of the red-ball players in Chennai just before the Bangladesh Test series was a key reason for the batters’ proficiency against spin in Dhaka. “I think our spinners outperformed their own spinners and our batsmen responded to the spin game better than theirs.
I think that was one of the best things for me and Floyd [Reifer, the hitting coach].” Congratulations to Cricket West Indies for allowing us to train and prepare in Chennai at the [Super Kings Academy and Sri Ramachandra Center for Sports Science],” said Sammy. “[Batting coach] Floyd Reifer, the work that he and Sri [Sriram Krishnamurthy, academy high performance coach] did with the batsmen and prepared them for these conditions led us to what you saw from batsmen against spin.
And of course the preparation we made after our arrival, which then had an impact on the game, always made us hpy. “But if you look at how we have progressed as a Test team, I think the team has settled in now. The roles we challenged each player to play seem to settle into this role.
“Also, I think the way we played, our spinners outplayed their spinners and our batsmen responded to the spin game better than theirs. I think that was one of the best things for me and Floyd. He bragged about how we were going to challenge the total they had put up and how the guys came out and did that.
Brandon King [81 not out] was special in the fourth inning. So those are some of the main things that really impressed me in this game. “Jomel Warrican got his fourth Test with five hits, Bangladesh vs West Indies, 1st Test, Dhaka, Day 2, October 29, 2026. In the Dhaka Test, Jomel Warrican was named man of the match for his nine wickets in two innings while Chase took a five-for in Bangladesh’s second innings. This came as the Bangladesh spinners took eight out of 10 wickets in the first innings but not a single one in 28.1 overs of bowling in the second.
Chase’s accuracy, particularly his patience and persistence despite mixed results in Test cricket, also impressed Sammy. “I have to say the leadership of Roston Chase… We talked about it when he scored the first 100 as Test champions, the leadership he brings has never lost its voice despite everything that has hpened in that first year of the Test championship,” Sammy said. “We continued to work and saw results because of Floyd Reifer’s constant work with the batsmen, but also because of the willingness of the batsmen to do some of the things we’re trying to do.
“Bowling with Ravi Rampaul, the data we put together to develop plans and then come back to the players. The way they have shown maturity and responsibility is progress. For me, progress is success and we will continue to work on it.
