Gqeberha, Day 4, October 21, 2026 West Indies coach Daren Sammy said better performances in the World Test Championship would be an incentive to improve their financial well-being. Sammy told the players that it would be their performance on the field that could translate into better pay in the future. Last month, Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced that players would take a 25 per cent cut in their fees as part of a wide-ranging series of measures taken by the board as part of a “comprehensive counter-attack on all financial, development and competitive challenges”.
Sammy said the announcement has no impact on the West Indian players currently touring the subcontinent, citing performances in the ODI and T20I series in India. He said he expected the red-ball team to respond similarly in Bangladesh, where they will play two Tests from Wednesday. “If you look at the way we played in the India series when the news was broken to the players, the way they reacted shows the drive, passion and desire to help turn West Indies cricket around,” Sammy said.
“I think there is a reality and an understanding of where you are as a professional, as a board, and there is no secret where we are, financially of course. “My word to the boys, especially in this World Test Championship, if you finish in the top five, there are additional incentives. ICC has invested a lot of money in the World Test Championship in terms of prize money and this is an opportunity for our boys to move up from the number eight spot we finished in the last two cycles.
“I don’t think it’s a locker room conversation right now, but we’re aware of it. I challenged the boys to put themselves in a better position to negotiate and attract sponsors based on the performances we showed on the pitch. “ Jayden Seales broke up the frustrating standoff between Abdullah Shafique and Sajid Khan, West Indies v Pakistan, 2nd Test, Port of Spain, Day 3, August 4, 2026. Sammy highlighted the fact that they have not lost a Test series in 2026 as a sign of progress.
The West Indies have beaten Sri Lanka 1-0 and drawn Pakistan 1-1 so far this year and go into the final series of the 2025-27 cycle hoping to make a splash. “The expectations are still there,” Sammy said. “The way we played Test cricket this year, we didn’t lose a series this year.
It’s been a long time since we went a year without losing a series and this is our last series in the World Test Championship. “The message to the boys: give it your all. We have ten possible days of Test cricket left in this cycle and we are going out and giving it our all.
Whatever motivates you, use it to get out there and perform. We have prepared really well. Sammy believes that the time the red-ball team has spent in Chennai preparing for this series will give them a better chance of taking part in the two Tests in Bangladesh.
“This is something we as a board have really thought about to give the boys the best possible chance to prepare. We had the ODI team there and we thought Chennai had fantastic facilities. “We have sent the batting coach with the help of Sri (Sriram Krishnamurthy) from Chennai Academy and congratulate the director, he has proved this camp and preparation.”
When you prepare well, you give yourself the best chance to perform. So before this series I could see that the boys were well prepared and I hope that preparation translates into performance,” he said.
