West Indies defeated India 252 for 4 (Hope 102*, Rutherford 84, Mayank 3-36) by 249 for 5 (Samson 82, Tilak 44, Chase 3-24) by six points. They couldn’t get Shai Hope out at all.
After doing the same in ODIs, he led the West Indies’ most successful T20I chase and the most successful chase against India with his second T20I hundred from 45 balls. Hope couldn’t have done it without Sherfane Rutherford’s 84 of 37 after making his team 58 for 3 in the sixth. He will be lost in the euphoria but Roston Chase’s defensive bowling masterclass of 4-0-24-3 ensured the target did not reach the realm of the impossible.
That almost hpened in the World Cup semi-finals. Even then, Sanju Samson, who was reprieved early in his innings, played a key role in seemingly bowling England out for a total of 253, but it took the best of Jasprit Bumrah to stop England from raiding to within two hits. However, there was no Bumrah in Ranchi after Samson benefited from a 6-over to lead India with 82 off 41.
That’s five successful comebacks in five international matches on this tour. Hope’s good work began when he won his first throw of the tour and ended with his eighth and ninth sixes in the 19th over to seal the chase. The West Indies scored 204 in boundaries alone, the most they have ever scored in a T20I, surpassing India’s 148.
West Indies started the game with an interesting experiment. Aware that the dew would set in early in the cooler climes of Ranchi, they bowled seven spin overs and two part-time seam overs even before their two main fast bowlers came into play. During this time, Samson lived two lives and made the West Indies pay with typical grace.
However, Chase caught sharply with his hard lengths from the wicket to the left-handed batters. He caught the dangerous Abhishek Sharma in the middle of the powerplay and then bowled the eighth over for just seven runs as everything fell art around him. Even when Shamar Joseph and Shamar Springer were finally introduced, it only served as an outlet for the shackled Ishan Kishan.
He scored 24 from seven balls in these two overs, but Chase came back to push his stump away. India then promoted Shivam Dube, despite Chase’s success against left-handed batsmen. Dube made five off seven of Chase’s remaining 11 deliveries to take India to 161 for 3 in 14 overs.
There was now a thaw and the West Indies won five overs in the last six games against the Shamars. Springer got Samson out, Joseph managed a fine 16th over, but Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma showed how good the conditions were for batting by scoring 40 at more than two runs a ball, seemingly without missing a beat in anger. The ball continued to pass through their bats and Tilak cped it off with a hat-trick of six in the last over to finish with 23 points.
Roston Chase took three wickets while being economical, India vs West Indies, 2nd T20I, Ranchi, October 9, 2026. His slower balls wandered a lot in the first game, which is perhs why Mayank Yadav chose to bowl only at high speed and difficult lengths, taking two wickets in the first and third at the start of the sixth over. Little did India know that this would be her last joy of the evening. Rutherford managed just one shot before overhauling Mayank’s figures with two fours and a six to finish the powerplay at 72 for 3.
Hope had already taken care of Axar Patel, India’s best powerplay bowler since the World Cup, in the fourth round, playing him like an average pacer and hitting him for two sixes and a four. The end of the powerplay meant naught to West Indies as they kept up the assault from both ends. Rutherford was the most brutal, scoring 84 out of 120, giving Hope just some breathing room going into the home stretch.
Not that Hope was slow in this partnership, taking 33 off 17, but Rutherford was impressive, especially the 23 from Axar’s second over. India could have reached Rutherford for 39 off 19 but Mayank dropped a sitter to Kuldeep Yadav, who needed 128 in the last 10 overs. When Kuldeep Rutherford finally got out four overs later, his seven sixes and seven fours had reduced West Indies’ lead to 72 from 35.
India’s tactics again defied convention, bowling four overs of spin in the last five overs of the game. Mayank finished the evening with 3-0-36-3. Again, it is questionable whether this converted chance or whether a different order of bowlers would have made a difference in the final result.
Hope has just taken his batting to the next level and Romario Shepherd has helped him effectively with 34 of 13. Shai Hope took his chance despite West Indies losing two wickets early, India vs West Indies, 2nd T20I, Ranchi, 9th October 2026, taken in the middle!! Abhishek has had to face a number of dot balls so far and is pouncing in search of a big hit.
Motie turned half to the left within the circle and took a few steps back. The ball fell comfortably into his hands. Chase threw it to the shorter side and around.
There was a considerable bounce for him and Abhishek made it to the top of the bat, which Pooran landed under, and was lucky for the second time. He had dropped Samson to No. 6, and now, 76 points later, he finally gets his man. Hit briefly from outside, Samson crawls and tries to clear the point way back but can’t get enough power behind him and Pooran does the rest.
Here’s Sreshth: Springer’s celebration of P and V with his hands is a tribute to his mother (Pamela) and father (Victor), who passed away in 2026 and 2016, respectively. He got Abhishek back and now he is sending back the local, Ishan Kishan! Allows the length ball to slide through the off-stump. Kishan creates space by trying to pass this through an offside position.
The ball didn’t bounce as much as Kishan had hoped. He misses and sees his post flattened. Hit short in the middle, Iyer puts the ball high from the start, only to Hetmyer, who makes no mistake.
