The discussion focused on England’s Harry Brook, whose aggressive technique has made him one of the best T20I batters in the world, and India’s Abhishek Sharma, whose recent performances have caught the attention of international football. Badrinath expressed his belief that Abhishek stands above Brook as the most destructive force in the shortest international format.

He highlighted Abhishek’s impressive numbers in T20I cricket. The Punjab batsman has scored 2,267 runs in 71 T20Is at an average of 33.34 and a strike rate of 196.62. On the other hand, Brook has also played the same number of games in the shortest format and scored 1702 runs at an average of 36.21 and a strike rate of 164.93.

“I think Abhishek is one of the most devastating batsmen. It’s enough to scare powerplay bowlers, even if he’s baby-faced. His batting is next level,” Badrinath said in a video on his YouTube channel.

“The English media can say that Harry Brook is the best at the moment. But there is no chance. It is Abhishek and he has the numbers,” he added.

Why does Badrinath support Abhishek over Brook? Wellington hosted India’s third T20I against New Zealand where Abhishek scored a stunning century during the chase. He reached three figures in 35 balls before being dismissed for making 113 off 38 balls.

India successfully chased down New Zealand’s total of 199 and secured victory with 40 balls remaining and a six-wicket lead. The southpaw’s quick shot showcased the explosive striking that has characterized his recent T20I form. Abhishek’s T20I record lends considerable support to Badrinath’s assessment.

He holds the fastest T20I hundred by an Indian player, a 30-ball effort against Afghanistan in Delhi. His century in Wellington was the third fastest T20I hundred overall, equaling the records of David Miller and Rohit Sharma. In the same innings, Abhishek also scored a 15-ball fifty, the third fastest by an Indian in T20Is.

After his performance in Wellington, Abhishek regained the top spot in the ICC T20I batting rankings. He also surpassed Virat Kohli’s total and held the most T20I centuries for India. These successes reflect his consistency and influence on the format in recent games.

What are Badrinath’s concerns about India’s opening combination? Badrinath also touched on India’s opening partnership strategy in the series against New Zealand and expressed uncertainty over the team’s proach. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek opened the innings in the third T20I with Sooryavanshi scoring 45 off 19 balls.

India scored 118 points in the powerplay in this game. However, in the fourth T20I, a once again in-form Ishan Kishan replaced the 15-year-old in the starting XI and Samson started batting again with Abhishek. Badrinath questioned the long-term direction of India’s opening combination and the placement of other batsmen in the lineup.

But who should open?,” said Badrinath. “Vaibhav or Sanju Samson? Samson at three years old, I don’t think that’s fair.

I don’t know where this is going. But if they decide something, they have to stick to it,” he added.
