The three that matter: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, all smiling after dismissing Pat Cummins, India v Australia, World Cup, Chennai, October 8, 2023 When stumps were finally called, Bangladesh were 213 for 3, with Shadman having struggled all day for 74.
His try was only the 20th time a batsman had finished a day’s match unbeaten on 99 in Test cricket, with Mushfiqur Rahim’s try against Ireland last year being the previous and only other try involving a Bangladesh batsman. The last 19 cases ended with a century-long blow. The first break in play occurred at 3:16 p.m. local time, and the players returned after a 50-minute break.
At 4:22 p.m. it was canceled again. as Shadman went from 96 to 99 in the four overs of the game. West Indies ctain Roston Chase had tried to bring in a fast bowler before the first break, but the umpires deemed the light insufficient to bowl fast. Shadman faced 219 balls and hit ten fours as he departed with Litton Das on 10*.
Shortly before the first break, Towhid Hridoy had to be stretchered due to cramps in his left leg due to poor lighting. Heat and humidity had already played a role during the Dhaka Test and Hridoy required on-field treatment before he could no longer continue. Shadman was alert from the start of the day, although his opening partner Tanzid Hasan was not at all the same.
Tanzid collected 22 balls before beating Jayden Seales, allowing Justin Greaves an easy catch at second slip. Tanzid only scored 7 points as his inconsistency in Test cricket continued. The West Indies fast bowlers found movement and extra bounce with the new ball, making it difficult to score in the early rallies.
However, Shadman held his ground at the other end and added 59 runs with Mominul Haque for the second wicket. Shadman handled the bounce well by scrambling on short balls and stayed close to the off-stump. However, Mominul fell when he played a potentially unnecessary shot before the lunch break when he advanced upfield and caught Shamar Joseph past Jomel Warrican in the middle.
Bangladesh went to lunch at 96 for 2. Shortly after the lunch break, Shadman reached his half-century before Bangladesh lost to Najmul Hossain Shanto. He missed Warrican’s driving throw from the wicket as he attempted a paddle swing and lost weight after a successful check by Roston Chase.
He scored 19 off 42 balls, leaving Bangladesh at 110 for 3. Hridoy also started alertly and hit some boundaries from Joseph, including a powerful pull shot. Shadman liked the pace of Greaves, often driving him through the covers before looking past his fine leg.
The two steadied Bangladesh after Shanto’s dismissal, with Shadman taking few risks and Hridoy gradually becoming more comfortable dealing with spinners. Bangladesh reached Tea at 177 for 3. After tea, Shadman continued his vigil, although he set some boundaries.
He pulled Chase’s half-tracker through midwicket before driving debutant Joshua Bishop to cover, who had taken a tight turn at one point. Hridoy, meanwhile, was increasingly plagued by cramps and struggled to finish his singles before finally bowing out in the 66th minute. Hridoy was dismissed with 42 off 84 balls.
He added 88 runs for the fourth wicket with Shadman, Bangladesh’s greatest partnership at the time, although according to Mohammad Salahuddin he should return to bat if necessary. Litton, who only regained fitness before the game after his hip injury, hit back a four-point throw before the referees sent the players off the field for the first time because of poor lighting. When play resumed, Shadman managed three more runs but failed to get the single he needed to reach his century before the light conditions deteriorated again.
Warrican was the best bowler of the day for the West Indies, taking 2 for 33, while Seales took the other wicket. Bishop remained wicketless on debut but troubled the batters with his turn as the West Indies had to work hard for their three wickets. Unconvinced, Shadman consulted Litton and immediately reconsidered the decision. A good length from outside turns slightly backwards and catches the batsman on the back foot attemng a defensive push. He misjudges the length and is hit high on the front pad.

Jomel Warrican was in the money on the second morning, Bangladesh vs West Indies, 1st Test, Dhaka, Day 2, October 29, 2026. Ahead of him and away, Joseph gets his first wicket of the innings! The length ball flew off the line at 141.2 km/h and carried the field well. Five-wicket haul for Warrican! Shoriful looks at Litton and then decides to reconsider the decision. Throws a ball of sufficient length along the line from the stump, plays with the entire face of the bat, but does not go behind the line of the ball, cuts off the inner thigh in front of the stumps.
The bat is far away from where the ball lands. When pitching to the outside, the impact occurs on the line and hits the middle stump. It’s perfect and Warrican gets his fourth fiver in Test cricket.
