In the first drop, after Voll had made 25 off 18, including Thunder’s only six of the game, Learoyd hit nine boundaries and put on 62 with Heather Knight in a match-winning third-wicket partnership. The pair needed 28 runs after the bounce to bring Thunder within sight of victory. Knight and Nadine de Klerk finished the job, bringing their team home with 18 balls remaining.
Learoyd admitted he felt “really nervous” batting at the top of the order but he will be confident of starting the season with a strong performance. “Probably a bit of confidence, I think,” Learoyd told Fox Cricket. “It’s not always something I’m good at, so it’s really nice to feel like I can put the results on the board and hopefully that will help me believe I’m good enough to do it.” Earlier, Voll’s four wickets and hand in a run-out were crucial in the Renegades scoring just 138 for 9 in their 20 overs.
“She was great, wasn’t she? The true all-rounder,” said Learoyd. “He’s someone who I think makes a really good contribution to our group, both with the bat and the ball and on the field.”
It was really nice to see her have a really good season.” Renegades opener Hayley Matthews gave her team a good start with the bat, scoring 45 off 30 balls before going deep. Matthews put on 56 for the first wicket with Courtney Webb and Georgia Wareham managed a handy 23 off 19, but a late innings clash cruelly dented their chances. The Renegades lost 5 for 2 in seven balls in the 17th and 18th overs as Voll wreaked havoc.
