South Australia were bowled out for 316 midway through the fourth day, with opening batsman Mackenzie Harvey scoring 90. South Australia, Shield champions for the past two seasons, looked well-placed to take victory with 422 points as they progressed to 1-182 on the final day of play. Harvey was unbeaten on 90 and holds Nathan McSweeney’s 57.
However, Harvey only lasted 11 balls without adding to his night’s total before being bowled between bat and pad by Ashton Agar, and on 66 McSweeney tentatively pushed a ball off Kieran Elliott, but it was caught well by Cameron Bancroft at second slip. After a strong start to the season, McSweeney missed the ideal opportunity to continue his push for a test recall. He scored a century for Australia A in India against India A earlier this month and then returned home to score another one-day century for South Australia before scoring over 50 in each of South Australia’s two previous Shield games.
South Australia lost 132 for 9, suffering their second Shield defeat in 10 days, having also lost by six wickets to Queensland at the Adelaide Oval. South Australia got their title defense off to a strong start with an innings victory over Victoria at Junction Oval in the first game of the season. South Australian coach Ryan Harris believes his side missed an opportunity on Tuesday.
“We had a good day planned for today,” Harris said, before describing the batting performance as “not good enough” after he was bowled out for 154 in the first innings and fell again in the second. In their second innings, six of South Australia’s top seven batsmen got going but none conceded a big score. Agar finished the innings with figures of 3 for 62 while Elliott, Jhye Richardson and Corey Rocchiccioli took two wickets each.
