Namibia, one of the hosts of the 2027 ODI World Cup, was playing only its second bilateral ODI series after playing for the first time in September against South Africa, which it lost 3-0. This series also saw Namibia win its first ever match against a full member country by securing a 31-run victory in the second ODI. The series was then tied 2-2 and in the fifth ODI Ireland elected to bat first.
However, they soon lost fly-half Tim Tector and Andy Balbirnie to single figures. Cade Carmichael and Harry Tector then tried to stabilize the innings but Jack Brassell broke their 29-run stand in the 19th over. Smit then managed to take three in one go, first dismissing Ctain Lorcan Tucker from the first ball of the 23rd over and then removing Curtis Campher and George Dockrell for ducks.
He returned to bowl Gavin Hoey for 9 overs in the 33rd over, giving Ireland nine overs against Brassell, and then completed Ireland’s innings for 129 by knocking out Jai Moondra in the over. In the chase, the Namibian openers got off to a good start, adding a combined 40 runs before Moondra broke through. Louren Steenkamp’s 46 from 44 balls, followed by Gerhard Erasmus’ 30 from 18 balls, kept the comeback on track.
Namibia sealed the contest in the 22nd over with 172 balls to play as Zane Green sealed the historic win with a six.
