The gesture came during the 3rd T20I of the 2026/27 Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe series, a match which Afghanistan ultimately controlled from start to finish.  This attracted considerable attention given the visible intensity of the confrontation prior to Rashid’s light-hearted response. The sequence began when Burl, playing for Zimbabwe, attempted and missed a reverse sweep of Rashid’s bowling, taking a hit on the front pad at stump lineout.

An LBW strike followed, but was rejected by the umpire. Three deliveries later, the two players exchanged harsh words on the field and umpire Ahmad Shah Pakteen had to intervene to separate them. After the end, hostilities briefly resumed, forcing the second on-field umpire, Farooq Khan, to intervene again.

At this point, Rashid decided to defuse the tension with the gesture of a flying kiss to Burl. He was sent off for 30 off 29 balls, including five four-balls, against Abdollah Ahmadzai, making him Zimbabwe’s top scorer on the day. Afghanistan ends their dominant run and secures a 3-0 win. Zimbabwe’s innings in Sharjah was quick. Innocent Kaia fell for 8 in 0.6 overs, Brian Bennett followed with the same score in 1.1 overs and Sikandar Raza was out for 13 in 3.2 overs.

Burl briefly stabilized the situation by hitting several boundaries off Omarzai in the fifth over, the second of which was a sliding ball on middle for four. Despite this resistance, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 79 in 14.3 overs. Noor Ahmad was the standout performer with the ball, taking 5 wickets for 13 runs, a return that marked his first five-wicket haul in T20I cricket.

Rashid himself bowled two overs and conceded seven runs without taking a wicket. The pursuit of Afghanistan was brief and decisive. They reached the target of 80 in just 8.1 overs and finished at 80 for 3.

Ibrahim Zadran finished with an unbeaten 25 wickets and Afghanistan crossed the finish line with 7 wickets in hand to finish the series 3-0.
