The 26-year-old left Western Australia this season after numerous back injuries left him considered a white-ball specialist. Jackson lost his contract despite being WA’s leading wicket-taker in one-day domestic matches and also playing for Australia A in a top-end series against Sri Lanka A last year, with the return of Jhye Richardson and Lance Morris from Cricket Australia’s central list to the state list leading to a consolidation of places.

But he shone on his debut in Thursday’s Shield season opener in Sydney as Tasmania got off to a good start. Jackson took 3 for 36 and his debutant Jake Scott took 4 for 35 as Tasmania reached 241 for 9 stumpings at Cricket Central after NSW won the toss. Ben McDermott shot a crucial 77 and opener Caleb Jewell scored a 50.

After Jackson caught Tasmania ctain Jordan Silk for five – his first Shield wicket – Jewell and No3 Tim Ward put on 93 for the second wicket. But Jewell hit Scott and was caught in the gully by NSW ctain Charlie Stobo. This sparked a 4-5 game that saw the visitors edge out 108-5 with Teague Wyllie and Jake Doran both looking for ducks.

Jackson scored twice while Ward was left with 38 points, while Wyllie got on the back foot to Jack Edwards at second slip. McDermott, batting at number 5, worked with the tailenders to stabilize the innings but he was the last wicket to fall on the day as Stobo took a great chance to channel Scott.
