However, off the field, the current Indian head coach maintains genuine friendships with his teammates, putting aside any competitive intensity that might have surfaced during the matches. Former India player Amit Mishra, who shared dressing rooms with Gambhir at domestic cricket matches, international matches and Indian Premier League franchises, recently gave an insight into the character of the man who now leads the Indian team.
Mishra spoke about his long-standing bond with Gambhir during a podcast pearance with former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra. The star player highlighted how outstanding Gambhir’s proach to personal relationships was, particularly his refusal to flaunt his financial success despite facing significant material difficulties during his playing days. “There is one thing that is very good about Gautam.
He remained my friend because he never showed that he was good,” Mishra said in an interview with Aakash Chopra. Mishra provided a concrete example that illustrates Gambhir’s grounded nature. During their playing days, Mishra owned an Alto as his first vehicle while Gambhir drove high-end cars like BMWs and Mercedes.
Despite this disparity, Gambhir never hesitated to travel to Mishra’s humble Alto whenever the situation required it and never made his friend feel inferior because of the difference in circumstances. “He was in an Alto with me, my first car. A guy who drove around in BMWs and Mercedes at the time still didn’t hesitate to ask me to pick him up in my car.
He did not show himself to me or anyone else and was a person of great self-respect,” Mishra added. What did Mishra reveal about Gambhir’s intensity on the field? Mishra, who represented India in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is, also shared an anecdote that showed how Gambhir separated his aggressiveness on the field from his personal connections.
During a domestic match between Delhi and Haryana, Gambhir and Mishra engaged in a heated exchange on the field, with words exchanged in the intensity of the moment. However, at the end of the day, Gambhir contacted Mishra and invited him for a cold coffee, demonstrating his ability to overcome competitive conflicts. “He would fight in the field, but if you were his friend, he would put that aside and come back to you too,” Mishra said.
While Gambhir represented Delhi and Mishra played for Haryana in domestic cricket, their paths converged in the zonal competitions and later in the IPL. The two cricketers shared the dressing room of Delhi Daredevils during the league’s inaugural season and later Lucknow Super Giants, where they worked together in the later stages of their careers. Mishra was recently pointed as spin bowling coach of Delhi Citals ahead of the 2027 IPL season, continuing his involvement in Indian cricket.
